If you keep cervix...

What is the vaginal discharge like afterwards? I actually have a problem where I have not only constant spotting and bleeding, but I also have massive amounts of cervical fluid. I've been tested numerous times for infections but it just seems to be the way I am. Is there any chance they will lesson post op if I go ahead with my LSH?

Re: If you keep cervix...

I am only speaking for myself here as it is a very personal decision. I asked them to take the cervix because I didn't want to take a chance of mini periods & I figured I couldn't have any more problems with it if it was not there anymore. That is what worked for me. So far I have had no problems with it.

Re: If you keep cervix...

Hi PCAN,

I think that this is a very good question. While each woman is different, many of us sisters
have dryness issues after a hysterectomy.

In my early 20's I had alot of cervical discharge to the point of needing to wear a pad or tampon.
So I understand how bothersome the discharge
Can be.

For me , my gyn cauterized the cervix. This was to help prevent the mini periods from happening.
And I am happy to say that I do not have the annoying discharge or periods.

This would be a good question for your GYN. as they are familar with your personal care. Maybe call the office and ask to speak to the Dr.'s nurse.

Let us know what you find out.

Re: If you keep cervix...

I asked my doctor about the the same issue when I was planning my hysterectomy. He was leaning towards a total laparoscopic, and I was leaning towards the subtotal.

When I questioned if a hyst (either removing or leaving the cervix) would help with the vaginal discharge, he said it all depended on what was causing it in the first place. If it was cervical mucus, it may help to remove the cervix. It was very uncertain what the results would be, basically.

I opted for the LSH (doctor did end up agreeing that the total wasn't necessary, and the subtotal would decrease my recovery time). While the discharge hasn't totally disappeared, I have many more days without it than I used to. And I haven't experienced any "mini-periods" at all. It's been over a year, and I'm very pleased with the results.

Re: If you keep cervix...

Hi PCAN,

I also had a LSH. I too had my cervix cauterized during my hyst and I have not had any mini-periods in post-op. I do have some mucus discharge from my cervix once in a while....but nothing really much.

Best wishes~

Re: If you keep cervix...

That was a good question. I to have clear discharge. I am having a LSH done on the 27th of October. My dr. told me that he would cauterize my cervix to prevent mini periods and try to help stop the discharge. I am very please with my decision. Thank you ladies for your stories
