dVH/RALH First Day home....pain!!

My surgery was yesterday and my dr WAS able to the Davinci!! WHich is the good news. Better news is that she found the source of my worst right side back and hip pain!!! Adhesions from a prior abdominal surgery. Now the downside..... I am in pain. Every time I pee it feels like my insides are going to fall OUT! is this typical? I now have the swelling I knew was coming and it's rather uncomfortable for sure! The gas has settled into my shoulder and walking is very painful BUT I am doing a little bit. Any suggestions or advice on the immediate post-op feelings is truly appreciated!!

I am so sorry you are in so much pain! I had a similar pain experience after my Da Vinci too, though, so it is probably normal, if unpleasant! What helped me that first day was very short walks up and down my driveway, pain killers and, for the gas, trying to lie on my left side (a tip I found on this site). By that evening the gas pain was much better though I remained in a lot of pain for some time. Hang in there - it does get better.

What you are feeling is normal. I'm only 6 days post surgery and I still feel like my insides are going to fall out when I pee. The gas pains haven't subsided for me either.

My gas pains were so bad for the first couple of days, every time I inhaled I would get a very sharp pain in my upper chest that would radiate into my right shoulder and up my neck and into my jaw. I seriously thought I was having a heart attack and was going to die! Just to make sure, the nurse ordered an ECG; turned out ok, so they confirmed it was just pressure from the gas.

I know the pain is almost unbearable, and the pain killers don't help with the gas pains. Keep walking as much as possible. Don't eat too much, limit (best to cut out completely) dairy and wheat products, and try prunes or prune juice to get bowel movements going.
