Sleeping on my side?
I'm a side sleeper, and I know it may be possible after surgery if I'm careful and comfortable. However, I'm wondering if there is a better side to sleep on? I almost exclusively sleep on my right side, just because of the way my bed is. Does it make a difference if you're a right side sleeper or left?
At this point, I know I'm probably just being obsessive, but for some reason this is the question that's been driving me nuts for the past couple of days.

Re: Sleeping on my side?
Hi Allie,
It's a legitimate concern. Most of us have difficulty sleeping on either side for a while after a TAH due to swelling and soreness. If you have a sofa where you can prop with some pillows to sleep on your back for a couple of weeks, that's what I'd reccomend. I'm still camping out on the sofa; its' just much more comfortable than the bed right now.

Re: Sleeping on my side?
Currently I can only sleep on one side because if I am on my back or the other side, I have horrible back pain.
Hoping it wont' be an issue once the uterus with the fibroids is gone.

Re: Sleeping on my side?
I slept on my side the first night after surgery will pillows propping me up. Once home, I used my tummy pillow tucked right into my belly and then wrapped myself around my body pillow. It didn't seem to make any difference on what side I was sleeping on, I was comfortable either side.
Then again, on another note, there are many ladies who cannot sleep on their sides until a week or two post-op. You are going to have to see how you feel afterwards. Many ladies seem to only be able to sleep in a recliner but for me, that is the last place I would have wanted to be. Everyone is different so who knows what will be best for you.

Re: Sleeping on my side?
I guess I'm just trying to get thing situated for when I get home. I'm getting nervous and stressing about little things, since I can’t control the bigger things. I've already told my DH that tomorrow we're moving the furnature so I can clean under the couches and the fridge.

Re: Sleeping on my side?
Don't be afraid - you just might be anticipating the worst!
I am just home (well, 1 1/2 days) from a TAH/BSO and you can't get much more radical than that! And guess what, I am sleeping on my side, no problems - either side. Even in hospital, after the first night, I could sleep on my side as long as I had a pillow behind my back and a small pad over my abdomen (I have a vertical incision).
Now I need no back support, but the abdomen pad seems to help. Last night I slept soundly in my own bed for many hours, on my favoured side and it was bliss! (Well, by comparison with a too-hot, noisy hospital and the pressure stockings!)
I hope you find you can enjoy this, too!

Re: Sleeping on my side?
I'm almost 3 weeks post op and only just started sleeping on my side. One side is more comfortable than the other, but even the "more comfortable" side has it's problems, I feel pulling up in my ribs and into my sides. I usually end up in my starting position slightly propped up on my back. This is one of those things that you just won't know if you can do until you get home and try it. I do miss those compression stockings though, they were the best, like a massage for your legs

Re: Sleeping on my side?
When I was in recovery as I was waking up, before I opened my eyes the nurse asked me my pain level, I held up some fingers then asked her if I could turn on my side. She said I could turn anyway I wanted, so I did.
After I got home I slept on my side(either one) right off the get go. Back sleeping is uncomfortable for me and tummy sleeping was out of the question. I just cuddled up to my DH or had a pillow between my legs and one supporting my tummy.
It will just be whatever is most comfortable for you. Hope your surger and recovery go well!

Didn't you get to keep the compression stockings? I can't imagine that is something they re cycle.

Re: Sleeping on my side?
Thank you. It's great to hear different answers so if I can or can't it's still normal. A little over 10 days to go and if this is my biggest stress I'll be very happy.
