Healing afterwards...

My doc has had me taking Lexapro for the past few weeks to help with my anxiety level. Works great! My husband and people at work have commented on how stree-free I seem.

What I am wondering, if after surgery when I am at home recovering from my TAH, are there any supplements I can take to help heal better? I already take a multi and calcium & magnesium.

I just want to rest as much as possible and heal.

My understanding is a good multi-vitamin, possibly with extra zinc & vitamin C will aid your recovery - but double check that with your dr when you are discharged home. You didn't mention what kind of surgery you're having?

Could I recommend that you consult a reputable vitamin store or health food store that carries a good brand of vitamin like "NOW" or "Enzymatic Therapies"? It's important to use a good brand because vitamins aren't regulated by the FDA and only the best companies have independent audits on exactly WHAT is contained in the vitamin, and whether or not it will dissolve and absorb in your system properly. I don't mean to sound gross, but as a CNA we see families bring residents (in nursing homes) vitamins of poor quality, like most you would find in a grocery or drug store. We call them "bedpan bullets" because they are seen, whole and undissolved (therefore worthless), when we are changing the residents' disposable briefs.

Some places, unfortunately, will try to sell you much more than you need. If you go in and are firm about wanting to get the most helpful 3 or 5 supplements/vitamins, they should be able to help you narrow it down quite a bit. Most places that sell "the good stuff" are great about listening to your needs and helping you find what's best for you - and won't push things that you're not sure about or don't need.

Good luck with this! You're on an excellent track with the multi and calcium/magnesium. Please also look into taking Vitamin D with the cal-mag. It's very important to help them absorb properly (check the label - it might already be in there). Every woman should take these.
