What happened to my taste buds??

I had my lavh/bso on 1-26th I also quit smoking on that day too. My problem is nothing taste right since then. I'm having hard time building up my appetite when nothing tastes good. Has anyone elses tastes changed after surgery and did it get better?

Re: What happened to my taste buds??

Yes. That happened with my taste buds and my appetite too. I wasn't even interested in my beloved chocolate. But now they both have returned. I think that happened around week five and I kind of wish they would have waited until I returned to work. I feel like I've spent the last week relaxing and fattening myself up.

The meds & anesthetic put them to sleep. They should wake up pretty soon.

I told my Dr a few years ago that I coldn't taste tomatoes. He said that not being able to tast some things was a sign of a zinc deficiency. You might ask your Dr, if it doesn't come back pretty soon.

Re: What happened to my taste buds??

Same here -- Part of my pre-op preparation was to stock my kitchen with my "favorites", including lots of yogurt and those Dole Naturals fruit cups. Wouldn't you know, grapefruit is my favorite?

When I came home from the hospital, all I wanted was tea, coffee, and peanut butter toast with strawberry jam. Go figure! It was a few weeks before I wanted any of those old favorite foods, or anything spicy or strong-flavored at all.

Re: What happened to my taste buds??

I could not put down ice before my surgery. For several months I always had a cup of ice to chew on with me and now I don't want anything to do with it....weird. My appetite is not as big either...guess thats a good thing...lol.

Re: What happened to my taste buds??

I also ate a lot of ice and I read here that has to do with low iron.

Re: What happened to my taste buds??

mjd2491, I had the same thing. Peanut butter toast, tea and coffee!!

I don't mind the loss of taste. I m eating less, so I don't have to worry about my weight.
