Not a vaginal candidate???

My surgery is scheduled for Nov. 13th via da Vinci. When I went to my appointment the doc said I would feel a big pinch and a tug. Which was very painful. Then he seemed disappointed when he said Vaginal is a definite no. What was he checking and why am I not a candidate for vaginal hysterectomy?

Re: Not a vaginal candidate???

A biopsy? Also I was not a candidate because of how big my uterus was. He said no way it was coming out that way.

Re: Not a vaginal candidate???

I already had the biopsies a week earlier. I'm not sure what he was doing but it didn't hurt as bad as the biopsy did. My uterus is rather large though. I was wondering if my cervix or vagina is in bad shape and that is what made me not a candidate for the vaginal procedure.

Re: Not a vaginal candidate???

Maybe is it tilted? I'm sure he has a good reason I would call and ask tomorrow.

Re: Not a vaginal candidate???

I know a year ago my doctor said a vaginal and this time during my exam when he checked me s when he switched to saying there was no way it was coming out that way. So perhaps the biopsy has nothing to do with it, but when he checked you, like me, realized how big our uterus was.

Re: Not a vaginal candidate???

I have an appointment for pre op on Monday. I will ask him then. I should have asked when he done the exam but it was my first appointment with him and I was flustered a bit. My Gyno sent me to him because he does the da Vinci procedure and she knew it would be easier on me. I hope she was right. She has been my gyno since I was 14 and i'm 40 now lol.

Re: Not a vaginal candidate???

I had a TVH in Sept....I had 3 biopsies before my Dr even decided to do a hysterectomy and I felt the "pinch" for a week! ouch!
Usually if you are not a candidate then it's either because your uterus is larger than normal or your uterus tilted.

Re: Not a vaginal candidate???

It's likely the big pinch you felt was the tenaculum (clamp) going on you cervix so that we could examine you cervix and uterus positioning. That clamp can hurt!

Please get a second opinion if they feel they need to switch to TAH. After my exam, I was also not a candidate for vaginal due to positioning of uterus but they explored other options, involved a second surgeon and did a TLH instead! Bringing in a second surgeon saved me from a TAH. I was very lucky!
