Getting a little nervous
Well my surgery is next Thursday, hard to believe just about a week away. I go tomorrow to meet with my Dr. for a pre-op appointment. I think one of the things I'm nervous about is just the unknown, how I'll feel afterwards, if there will be much pain, the gas, all that stuff. I have been reading alot on here and it has been quite helpful, but then it is a little nerve wracking too. I'm have the DaVinci surgery where he'll remove my uteruse and cervix, not sure if he'll take out my tubes (asking that question tomorrow), but I'm keeping my ovaries if they are healthy. I'm 32 so I want to keep my hormones. I can't help but wonder the actual cost of all of this will be too. Talk about a run around on trying to get an estimate on what it'll cost me out of pocket after I pay my deductible and when the insurance kicks in some. So I'm sure I'll be shocked when the bills start rolling in.

Re: Getting a little nervous
This can be a nerve racking time before surgery. Write down your questions for your doctor. You may want to check out the pre-op section of this site for taking to your doctor.
Keep in mind for recovery, every woman is different. So, don't necessarily let the posts upset you. Most the time, people post when they are having problems. Rarely, do they post to say everything is great. View them as informative. However, I will not lie to you - recovery from a hysterectomy will take a while. You will probably have gas issues, you will probably have pain, and you will probably have extreme fatigue. It will take some time to heal from this. You need to take it easy and let your body recovery. You only get one chance to heal right.
Good luck to you
(((Hugs)))

Re: Getting a little nervous
It's so normal to be nervous - we naturally want to protect our bodies from the "invasion" that surgery is.
Best not to think about the procedure! You will be in very safe and experienced hands, and it is really pretty much a routine for the surgical team.
I worried a lot beforehand - afraid I might not wake up, etc etc. I'd never had surgery before in my life and I'm not young (63 in a day or so!)
But believe me, the surgery was a breeze. The recovery has been no worse than I expected from what I'd read on here. I had a TAH/BSO, so it was pretty major, and I didn't expect it to be easy. Still, it was straightforward, I healed well, and now I feel really fantastic 99% of the time and am doing everything I ever did pre-op. except cycle several kms to work.
The time goes by really fast (in retrospect!), but you have to make the most of your recovery time by doing what you are told, resting, walking (very important - in moderation) and avoiding lifting, etc., as you will know by now. It's worth being careful at the beginning, because after a few weeks you can begin to get your life back gradually.
Good luck - think postively, and we are here to see you through!
Oh - and your pre-op. appt. might make you feel much more reassured and informed (which was my experience)

Re: Getting a little nervous
Me too! My surgery is next wed and though I am very busy trying to take care of things pre-surgery, when I stop and think, I get really anxious. I am throwing a big "last weekend out" with the girls this sat/sun-dinner, hotel, and spa day all with the intention of it being a positive distraction! My DH is being 100% supportive, but I am still a little wigged out...
I guess there is no way around it! Keep breathing...and cleaning and cleaning while I can!

Re: Getting a little nervous
Hi, Just read your post and I can so relate to you.. I'm scheduled for surgery in 3 weeks and I'm so nervous!!! I'm 41 and I've never had surgery before. The anesthesia is the that part is freaking me out right now, just like you mentioned... afraid I might not wake up or even worse, what if I wake up during surgery... you know silly thought but my mind is speeding like crazy
Sometime I'm even thinking about not doing it! This is how nervous I am!!Not good... But your post make me realize that I'm not alone and will go through it )
Thank you!

Re: Getting a little nervous
I feel exactly the same "Getting a little nervous" that is. My surgery is in 4 weeks time. Have found this site so helpful, particularly with regard to preparation in a practical way. I think our human nature automatically makes us expect the worse and so when we read about others recovery we think we will go through all the bad parts - well at least thats what I am doing, and at the end of the day whilst we wont be running any marathons for a while , every person is different and hopefully it wont be quite as bad as we think.
A question please. For those who have had Caesarian sections in the past, would you think the recovery time from hysterectomy is far longer and more difficult or would there be any comparison (leaving aside the emotional differences)?

Re: Getting a little nervous
Thank you everyone for your responses, it is more comforting knowing I'm not alone feeling this way.
Kimchi, I'm doing the same thing this weekend, a sort of last hoorah before my surgery. I'm going with some girls scrapbooking for the weekend, so looking forward to it!
Today is my pre-op appointment and I have my list of questions ready to go for the Doctor.

Re: Getting a little nervous
Hello Harrric 01 try not to worry, it will be a breeze, as for the bills I was horrified at how much this surgery costs, but as my Husband says it was worth every single penny and then some life is good now, no pain, sex whenever we want to without worrying about how sick I will be after. you will be so happy you did this, as for the co-pays and deductibles I am just paying one at a time and the ones that I cannot pay in one check I am making payments to I have a little over $1,000 left to pay and will pay it gladly, the Doctors gave me my life back

Re: Getting a little nervous
Hi!
My surgery is the same day as yours. I can honestly say I've never been this scared before. I'm so scared of the unknown stuff. How I'll feel after and what to expect!! Sounds like you have extra worries tho. Where I'm from we don't have to pay a dime for the surgery. Other than incidentals.

Re: Getting a little nervous
Wow JessicaB, to not have to pay for surgery, that's amazing!
I had my appointment today and my Doctor answered all of my questions I have and reassured me of my fears I have. I know he'll do a good job and everything will turn out great. Thank you everyone for your responses!
