And now for something completely different...a positive post-op post!
Yesterday I had my first glimpse into the positive aspects of this surgery on my life. I know that not having pain or being anemic or having to plan my world around painful, excessive periods are all big benefits...but they are all things that are gone...not things that are here.
This may not make much sense to some and I apologize ahead of time for that.
As some of you know, I'm an actress. I also sing. And yesterday was my first voice lesson post-op. I was very nervous about what shape I'd be in and what I'd be able to do. Singing involves the abdominals in a big way so you can imagine my concerns...would I have pain, would I be able to support my breath, how would I sound after not singing for almost 6 weeks, would I have pain?!? *grin*
Much to my surprise (and my voice teacher's), everything was so much easier. My breath control was not an issue and the very color and tone of the voice were so different. (Sorry for the artsy terminology!) It was like a whole new voice.
And then I realized that all those time I was singing in the past, my fruitbowl of a uterus with her solid fibroids, was getting in the way. You see the quick version of it is that the diaphragm descends when you inhale...displacing the organs in the abdomen. When you exhale, the abdominals muscles get involved. With these solid masses in the way, things weren't working as they should and so breath control was harder for me.
So there I was, having not rehearsed in 6 weeks, hitting power high notes. (If you know the show Wicked...I was singing Defying Gravity, not an easy song.) It was a thing of beauty...and just what this sister needed to raise her spirits. It is very hard for me not to be working, auditioning etc so this was just what I needed to make me feel good about myself again.
After that, on the way home, I realized that I'm not out of breath climbing the stairs out of the subway or tying my shoelaces anymore!!!
I know this may seem trivial to some of you, but it was a big aha! moment for me. And the first few that helped me realize, in practical terms, the benefits that I'm already getting from this surgery as I enter week 6.
So just in case it helps someone else, I thought I'd share. And if you thought it was silly, that's fine too. My world is a bit weird and often hard for others to relate to or care much about...and that's ok. :-)
Hope you are all finding your own aha! moments.

There is NOTHING trivial in having your life improve, no matter where those improvements come from!!
To find that things were being effected that you weren't even aware of....and to have them get better....that's just awsome hon!!

Way to go! That is wonderful. Thanks for posting a positive post! (Okay, say that 3 times really fast ) I absolutely loved Wicked, saw it on Broadway about a year ago. Phila PA show sold out too quickly and I am anxiously awaiting tour that will run thru Baltimore in January.
Congratulations!

Hi newyorkgal!
Thanks for sharing the positive reactions to your surgery so far. That's the way "it's supposed to work" and it's good to hear that, at this point, your quality of life seems to be on the right track.
I hope that the days ahead just keep getting better and better for you.
Many s and Best Wishes Always,

My first "aha" moment was when I had to move myself from the gurney to the hospital bed...and I realized that although I was in much pain from the surgery, I wasn't hurting internally in many other ways (back pain for one).
Then Friday, while at my MIL's - my DH and I were washing, compounding and waxing MIL's car...lots of movement (practically standing on my head to wax the bottom of the car)...and realizing later that day that I was in no pain...had I done that before surgery I wouldn't be moving the rest of the day and all of the next!!! Gone are the fibroids and many, many adhesions...and GONE is the pain.

I have not had any big "aha" moments - just continually glad that I did this and enjoying life without bleeding like a stuck pig. As time goes on you will find many more reasons to be thankful you did this. It is so worth it. Thanks for the positive note, I am very happy you have received this benefit.
