Made it to the other side

Had my TAH/BSO on Tuesday night. I came home today. Doing pretty good. Only one question. I haven't had BM and the gas is killing me. They gave Colace at the hospital, but doesn't seem to help.

I'm only taking Tylenol 3 for pain, but the gas is horrible.

Very tired and sleeping a lot, but overall I'm doing pretty goo.

I'll check in later.

Glad you are home and that is behind you.

I have read from posts here that Gas-X, chewing peppermint gum, and walking help with all of that horrendous gas.

Have not had my TAH yet, but plan to have the above on hand and packed to go to the hospital.

My best wishes for your recovery.

tdehoff welcome home sorry to hear about the gas pains. I know that short walks and drinking lots of water helped me. I also used a heating pad on my tummy it seemed to ease the gas pains. DH bought me some gas ex and it seemed to help alot. I also ate alot of fruit it seemed to help with BM and they had me eating lots of fruit in the hospital mainly oranges, kiwi, and grapes. I hope you are feeling better soon. Just rember the princess needs pampering.

Trish,

I highly recommend 2 herbal teas. Peppermint tea for any gas or nausea and a tea called "smooth move" for constipation!! I took both to the hospital with me and used them on day #2 (with my Drs. knowledge and you should check with yours first to!). They worked great. Especially the smooth move tea--had BM by day #3 and without any pain, discomfort or diarhea which some stool softeners or laxatives can give you. I use to be a hospice nurse and this is what we recommened to our patients that were on alot of narcotic pain relievers. Walking and water are also helpful!

I used metamucil and colace at the beginning to help move things along. Just don't take the metamucil at the same time as medications, as it will absorb the meds and push them right through before they can get to work.

You may find that your first BM will be painful, so I suggest doing a Fleet liquid suppository when you feel like you need to move it on out. They look like a "mini" enema and they will give you relief from straining too hard. Fruit, fiber and a product called Perdiem - DR. recomended - help from gettin too hard.
Also, Gas X for gas.
I hope you get relief soon, this has been the toughest part of my recovery so I wanted to let you know what works for me.
Remember to rest!

make sure you keep up with stool softners as coedeine causes constipation!! Getting peppermint from an herbal shop and mixing that with hot water is an absolute dream for relief from gas! Saved my sanity!!
