Suggestions for helping stomach pain when coughing

Hi I'm in Kent I had sub total adominal hysterectomy, ovaries removed and part of stomach muscle because I had servere adhesions sticking all my organs together so were cut out/apart and sewed back in place. I'm doing ok very painful but I have this dry chest cough that absolutely hurts my stomach the pain is excruciating I was wondering other than a pillow to help if there are any suggestions. Cough mixture stung it so bad it made it worse I feel like I'm going insane. It happens when i walk, talk, sitting up. I hope you all recovering well

Have you tried a binder? I used a binder for 3 weeks straight. It gave me support

Re: Suggestions for helping stomach pain when coughing

Ugh, i know how it hurts. Fortunately i rarely coughed/sneezed after my surgery, but it hurt when I did.

The funny thing is ... It doesn't hurt anymore when I cough or sneeze BUT when i know one is coming, I still instinctively grab a pillow and hold my tummy!!

Re: Suggestions for helping stomach pain when coughing

I was able to get a binder as suggested by another poster and it helps tremendously when it comes to moving certain ways as well as coughing and even having BM's due to the stomache pressure. If you can't come up with one of those, you can try a corset or even one of the body shapers tank top style undergarments as there is so much lycra in them that they help to 'bind' you and hold it all together tight.

Hope that helps.

Re: Suggestions for helping stomach pain when coughing

Definitely use an abdominal binder but best thing is to hold a pillow across your abdomen. Tay well hydrated, and keep some lozenges or hard candies next to your bed, Hot tea or hot water with honey may help coat your throat.

It's so hard as I would be feeling ok if it wasn't for this cough which is so pathetic but painful! I'm usually such a strong minded girl, I'm 34 have 3 young girls and this has knocked me for six! Once again thank you all. Have a nice day.

Re: Suggestions for helping stomach pain when coughing

Ms. Helsbels (do you mean that you live in Kent, WA?), just wanted to say that I agree w/the lasses here about that binder/corset thingy, the hospital/doctor should have given you one during the stay (drat it all anyway). And btw, I live in Redmond, WA. Am so sorry to hear about the coughing thing, it is extremely painful am having similar situation, the sharp stabbing pain in the belly button area is driving me nuts. I do not take any type of deep breath simply because that type of breathing is sooo painful. Holding my torso/tum area is the only thing that seems to help. But perhaps wearing that Binder thingy now may be a good idea. So hope that you are doing a wee bit better each day. If you do live in Kent WA area, perhaps we could exchange telephone numbers to chat (may make us feel better?).. Cheeres, Aryn

Re: Suggestions for helping stomach pain when coughing

You should be able to ask your drugstore or home health care co to get you one .. May be quicker than online.

Re: Suggestions for helping stomach pain when coughing

Lady akc, unfortunately I am in Kent United Kingdom! Thank you for your kind words.. NewinNC2012 I believe the way things work here are different with obtaining I must admit the cough seems to be easing... I am surprised that they did not give me a binder on discharge of hospital. Thank you for your advice. It all helps and I feel much brighter in myself today.
