Re: help
Read this web site! The forums are crammed with exactly the information you're asking for.
Read the pre-op forum (avoid the post-op one). Look for the "hints from members" thread at the top of this one, read the articles.
It would make this a very long thread, indeed, to repeat the number of stories already posted here.
Good luck!

Re: help
try not to worry about the pain,...the doctors and nurses do an excellent job in keeping you pain free as much as possible, and after you leave the hospital, your doctor will give you pain killers for you to take at home.
the worst part for me was the waiting...everything after was easier...try to relax and have faith that your surgery and recovery will be a smooth one...

Re: help
Hi Shopperchic1204
It is common to be scared to think about an upcoming surgery as I too felt the fear of so many "what ifs." Prior to my surgery, I even dreamt about the anesthesia and weird thoughts about it. All I could remember the day of the surgery (it was @ 7:30 am), I was talking to the Anesthesiologist and then waking up in my room around 11:30ish - all done!
I had my TAH on 06/19/09 and I am now 5 days post-op. My Dr took away my uterus & cervix, leaving both my ovaries intact. I have had several issues with prolonged bleeding and had avoided hysterectomy for so many years. Prior to my decision of having the hysterectomy, I tried other alternatives. As birth controls, Novasure, Mirena, D&Cs had worked, these too shall passed ... well, these had stopped working for me.
I had a recent D&C in March to help stop my bleeding since 12/26/08, then I had the Mirena with hormones, however, I continued to bleed. My pathology results reported to my having hyperplasia and now fibroids. I have been bleeding, albeit "light" flow since 12/26/08 up until the day of my surgery (unbelievable, huh?).
Now, I feel great! I would like to share that I am very happy with my decision to have the hysterectomy. No more fibroids (and one the size of a medium grapefruit) and no more pre cancer cells!!! I should have done this a long time ago.
Dear princess, this website is so wonderful, we all have each other's support I am new to this site as well and I found comfort from our other sisters.
I wish you the best

Re: help
Hello Shopperchic!!! I had a SAH and I really was surprised that I wasn't in as much pain as I thought I would be in. I'm not saying it was a breeze....but my pain I was able to tolerate. What I did expect from the surgery was no energy. And that it takes so long to get your energy level back up. Yes I had some complications...but I got through them...Now I can truely say, " I FEEL GOOD"!!! and before my surgery, I couldn't say that for a long time....but now I can. I finally feel healthy.

Re: help
I had a TAH/BSO. Outcome could not have been better. I never felt 'real' pain the entire time, and if I had any, it was managed with Demerol, Toridol and Morphine. Worst part was getting up for the very first time, but walking took care of that.
Now, I feel fantastic, and don't even take Tylenol. I have energy, haven't had the dreaded hot flashes; I was even released to drive yesterday and did so around my neighborhood - no problems, and I drive a stick shift.
Relax...the worst part is the waiting...trust me.

Re: help
Such wise advise on this thread
I want to add that I did feel pain and it was my fault. I was distracted by visitors and forgot to administer my meds (through the IV) and pain soon caught up to me.
Other than that incident I blissfully did not feel much pain, keep up on the meds and a positive mind.

Re: help
I had TAH/BSO 8 days ago. This morning was able to walk twice around my cul-de-sac before being tired. The pain was managed very well at the hospital thru PCA and I only use my Percocet at night- just in case I turn to quick in my sleep. Otherwise, I only use Motrin thru the day and am in almost no pain.
I worked out my arms, legs, and abs prior to surgery to be ready and it helped when it came to first getting up to walk and use the bathroom. (Yes, those many squats at the gym paid off ) I am a teacher and planned this so I would have the time off to recover well. Planned and froze meals for myself and family.
Please read thru this site and don't be afraid to ask any question. The waiting is truly the hardest part of this process.

Re: help
This is the best place to help you prepare for this major life event. No one knows better than those of us who have been through it. I am only 8 days post-op, but the change in how I feel is amazing. And the lessons I've learned about myself and others are priceless.
Good luck!
