I won't say which, but one of the docs on that photo site is SUCH a sweetheart--very kind in addition to being an excellent surgeon! Such a small world. I'm so glad we get to sleep through all the icky parts on these movies!

Started to watch, and would like to see but don't know if I can stomach it. I know I am a wuss. I'll stick to the comments seeing that I have always been some what of a smart ***.

I tell people this one:

"My doctor told me my only job right now is to breathe. Everything else can wait"

It always makes people either crack up laughing, OR they get a really confused look on their face and leave it be. But it always works, one way or another!

It might be especially funny, since I am on a ventilator and don't breathe anyway. LOL

One I like, and that is actually true, is "My dentist told me not to for at least 12 weeks." It always brings the WHAT look. (I had a dentist appointment not long after surgery, and as a good mister hyster... with his hand in my mouth so I couldn't argue... told me all about how Princesses are to behave in recovery. Then went to the waiting room and told DH--3 months at least--REALLY.) Well, if the dentist says so....

Sometimes it is easier to not be so nice.....I like "Are you naturally this ignorant or do work at in everyday?"

No offense to anyone, but when all else failed, I have used the "gutted like a deer" remark. Also have reminded people who needed it that the sutures inside won't be dissolved for four months....

We all have circumstances in our lives where we may hear icky comments from people who simply don't understand, whether it's handicaps (visible or invisible), hearing aids, integrated families, body image, learning disorders, how a family is put together (we get icky adoption comments on occasion)...

Most of the time, the comments are born out of a sincerity, but the words come out wrong; they have not walked in your shoes. Many of you have admitted your own pre-hyst insensitivity in this very thread.

If you truly want to be EMPOWERED, take this opportunity to educate the inquirer by replying with a simple: "I am following my doctor's orders; thank you for your concern (insert sincere smile here)."

Your shining example might just make your little piece of the world a better place.
