Realistically how long will it be before I can go back to my office job after hysterectomy?

Let me start by saying I have really good job security, no one else in the firm knows what I do. That's wonderful most of the time, however I have to schedule a hysterectomy, realistically how long will it be before I can go back to work? I tried to post this in post op so I could talk to people who have had the procedure but the site wouldn't let me (!) since I haven't had my procedure yet, can someone help me here?

What kind of hysterectomy are you having? Recovery time depends on the type

I'm not up to date on all the terminology so here's what I understand about it. They are planning on leaving the ovaries but due to size of fibroid they can't do it vaginally, so it'll be regular surgery with the incision.

Re: Realistically how long will it be before I can go back to my office job after hysterectomy?

Every doctor seems to have their own "guidelines" and rules they go by. I am having mine tomorrow, vaginally, via the davinci. I was told that if I work an office job it was very possible that I could go back to work in 2 weeks. For anything else it would be 4 to 6 weeks, depending on how I heal. However, if they would have to remove my ovaries for some reason (which I hope I get to keep) It would be at least 6 weeks..no matter what kind of job I did. However, like I said every doctor has their own set of rules. Your best bet would be to ask your Doc, or surgeon. They should be able to tell you more.

I'm guessing my boss won't like the Dr's recommendations 😉

I had an abdominal and went back at 3 weeks, I work part time. I am walking, standing and sitting mainly, and I was fine.

My surgery was DaVinci Laprosocopic. I went back to my office job at 2 weeks. Dr took everything but the ovaries.

Re: Realistically how long will it be before I can go back to my office job after hysterectomy?

Hi bdatkinson! I am a paralegal in a very small law firm. If I am not there, the legal work does not get done. I had a DaVinci complete vaginal hysterectomy and went back to my job at two weeks. BUT and there is a a big BUT. It was not discomfort that was the big issue, but rather my endurance. The hysterectomy left me totally exhausted for a long time. I would go to work with my heating pad and a pillow to sit on and stayed until about 3:00 or 4:00, drove myself home and immediately went to bed. I needed the rest. It got better every day and before long, I was back at full speed. The tiredness hung around for a while, but it was manageable. Just listen to your body, it will let you know what you can and cannot do!! Good luck!

Re: Realistically how long will it be before I can go back to my office job after hysterectomy?

I am having a TAH (total abdominal hysterectomy) on 12/2/14 and my doctor told me 6 weeks. From what I have read in Facebook groups from other women who have had the same procedure I've decided to take the full 6 weeks rather than risk my recovery and be miserable sitting at my desk all day! I am fortunate to have the luxury to take the 6 weeks off without pressure from my employer. I hope it goes well for you!
