5 Years really?

I have been doing research about hysterectomy and what to expect after ~ short and long term. (I am leaving tubes and ovaries.) I understand that you can go into a surgically induced menopause that reverses once the ovaries kick back in. Most information says that I will have an increased chance of early menopause. My mom said her Dr. told her it was a for sure within 5 years of surgery... is that just the Dr's opinion, or is it something that just isn't spoken about?

Thanks for all your replies.

Hi Kaori!

If you can find solid, reputable research on the statistical probability of ovarian failure after a hysterectomy, based on a scientific study involving a significant number of women, good for you. Anecdotally, I've heard tales covering the full spectrum, ranging from ovaries going kaput and never waking up after the removal of the uterus, to ovaries blasting horomes at full speed for 25 years, like in the case of one of my cousins who had her uterus removed at age 30 and didn't start experiencing any menopause symptoms until age 55.

I didn't keep my ovaries so I have nothing to contribute based on my own experience in this regard, but I send my best wishes to you on your upcoming journey to good health!

Many s to you,

I wouldn't think it would matter too much. The point of keeping the ovaries is that even after menopause they continue to produce hormones to keep your bones in good condition.

5 Years really?

My Mayo Clinic physicians told me that I still had at least 10 years of strong ovarian function to look forward to after my hysterectomy, which I had at the age of 44.

There is a chance of ovarian failure after this surgery, but it's far from a foregone conclusion. In addition, even after menopause, the ovaries do not cease functioning -- they simply give off the same hormones in lower amounts.

In my case, my ovaries never even took a "nap" (as they sometimes do) -- I haven't missed a cycle in over two years.

Hope this helps.

I have my ovaries still and can tell I still cycle. In fact it seems like the PMS is a little more intense but mayhaps I'm being a drama queen

My Dr. said there is some old studies that gave the 5 more years info but that he expected me to have 10 more years before I head to menopause. I just don't think there is anything set in stone. Our bodies are amazingly individual.
