How long do hormones stay in system after hysterectomy?

Does anyone know how long (on average) your residual hormones remain in your system after your ovaries/uterus are removed? Do symptoms like hot flashes normally start right away or is there a large variance? I'm only 7 weeks out, but haven't noticed too much yet and have heard varying things....just wondering. I'm not currently on any HRT since I'm 55, but also had NOT gone thru menopause yet. (and hadn't experienced much in the way of hot flashes, etc before my hysterectomy). Any input appreciated!

Re: How long do hormones stay in system after hysterectomy?

Hi

Some women notice severe symptoms as soon as they wake up from surgery. Other women don't notice them for several months. It depends on how much estrogen your body has stored in body fat and other tissues. There is even the very occasional woman who never has a menopause symptom that she is aware of.

Surgical menopause is more extreme than natural menopause. This is because healthy ovaries will continue to give a woman estrogen, in smaller amounts, for the rest of her life. So, don't be surprised if you find you need a little HRT to keep you feeling your best. A little estrogen can also be beneficial for heart and bone health.

If you find yourself experiencing symptoms, or have more questions concerning surgical menopause, you can check out the Hormone and Menopause Central forum.

Best wishes to you for a continued good recovery.
