appetite

Had abdominal hysterectomy on the 24th and I've yet to eat a full meal this is with solids and liquids. My stomach growls I get something take a bite or two then feel either full or nauseated. I'm a little worried it may make a bm harder. And my family is worried about me. All I've eaten today is a banana. Anyone else have this?

Re: appetite

I had my TAH on apr 16 but didn't have really any appetite until at least one week later and I still hardly eat anything. It's not strange to not be hungry as your not expanding energy for food.
Try with the fluids such as soups, eggs if you can (high in iron), grainy toast (high in fiber). Also recommend a stool softener daily even if you haven't had a bm yet. It will help. Look for diets tips online for after your surgery.
Good luck but remember your spouter will come back in time. I'm two weeks and still don't feel like much so am just eating healthy to feed my healing.
Hugs😊

Re: appetite

I had a lot of nausea while in the hospital. I wasn't able to eat much there. So, when I came home, I was very careful with what I ate and avoided anything greasy like buttered toast or pizza. I ate a lot of applesauce and tapioca or rice pudding, oatmeal, Cheerios, jello, soups. Rice is good; brown rice has more fiber.

I still eat some prunes some and continue to use the dulcolase twice daily. I continue to try and eat whole grains, fruit and vegeatables.

Re: appetite

Be careful eating bananas. We tell people to eat them when they want to firm up their bowel movements, not keep them soft. Also try to avoid cheese. The appetite will get better, things are shifting downwards, and repositioning themselves, so I wouldn't get worried unless its going on more than a week. Are you sure your narcotics aren't making you nauseated? If one type of anti nausea pills don't work for you, there are several other types to try. Zofran (odansetron) melts under your tongue so you don't even need to swallow it before it starts working.

Re: appetite

I had a very small appetite the first week and found that when I did eat everything tasted funny. Little by little it did pass I stuck with soup and smoothies and uped my fluid intake. It was temporary and it was explained to me that because Im not being as active as normal my body wasnt requiring as many calories as it normally would. I hope you feel better soon ♡

Re: appetite

I am 3 weeks post-op and still don't have much of an appetite. It is getting better though. I too take a few bites of something and am done with it. At least i am feeling hungry now. I have been very nervous because of cancer issues so i think that has played a part.
Hang in there, it will get better!

Re: appetite

I felt the same way you are feeling for a good week. I think the pain meds really reduce the desire to eat. It will come back slowly after you start to tapper off the pain meds and you're up and about a little more. All normal. Hugs to you.
