Public System - Waiting List

Hi everyone,

Just a couple of questions for those of you in Oz who were/are on the public health waiting list

# Was your surgery in the time frame you were told?
# How much notice were you given of your surgery date?

I have just booked into the waiting list for my TAH they told me there is 3 categories A) 0-3months, B) 3-6months & C) 6-12months.

My dr has stated I am a category A so I'm guessing I will defintly have surgery in the next 3 months???

TIA

Re: Public System - Waiting List

I'm in Adelaide & was told 3 months like you when i had my app but the
next day they rang me & told me they were going to do it the following
week which they did & i was pleased about that. I was a Category A as
well so you never know - they may take you early as well.

Re: Public System - Waiting List

Thanks Stormy12 for your reply.

Has been just on 2 weeks since I booked in, sooner rather then later would be good but I think its the not knowing how long that is getting to me. Hopefully I'll get a date soon.

Hope your recovery is going well xx

Re: Public System - Waiting List

I travelled to sydney from mid n9rth coast as needed a really experienced surgeon. I paid $200 for the consult and then he asked if I wanted to go public or private, I said if i went public, how much longer would I have to wait (was trying to avoid my excess) and he said it made no difference! I had mine done 10 days after the initial consult at RPA sydney.

If your in Sydney can give you his name, he is very experienced surgeon in gynae and gynae/oncology.

All the best, Sandy

I am in Wollongong, the waiting list for a Hystrectomy in the public system down here is 9 - 12 months wait for (0 - 3 months) in the Wollongong hospital.

I am going to <admin> public hospital and the wait was spot on there (0 - 3 month). BUT in saying that my Gyno told me <> is now where they are doing the bulk of the Gyno work and most of the equiptment has been taken from Wollongong hospital over to <>.

<> have a BMI policy thou which has now been increased from 36 - 40 if your BMI is higher than 40 you will have to go to Wollongong for the Hystrectomy, D&C etc....

I got refused for the emergency D&C back in August this year due to my BMI "didnt meet their standards" got pushed to Wollongong thank heavens it was the week after as my Gyno only operates in Wollongong every 2-3 months.... At <> he operates 3 times per month....

Have since lost weight so managed to get put on the <> list with the shorter waiting time. Gyno said they had to increase the BMI from 36 - 40 end of August as they werent getting through the operating lists quick enough, due to more women being over the 36 BMI limit.

Long story but if you want to know anymore please contact me...

Re: Public System - Waiting List

Hi jenwa,

I was a Cat 2 and have waited since 17th Sept and I finally go in next week 14th Jan for my TAH which makes it almost 120 days. I was offered the op at another hospital on the 24th November but had to decline as it was too far from here and I would not have the doctor that I first saw for my consultation. So in theory, I could have had the op much sooner. I also had other reasons for declining as my mum is having treatment for cancer and she needed me to be there for support.

There is a website which gives you an idea on waiting times for 2008 but you will have to google it as we can't post a link here. (I tried and lost my post) Try Googling Vic Goverment Health, Your Hospitals Elective Surgery and then you can pick the individual hospital and it will tell you the average waiting times. It is working on last year's numbers but at least it gives you an idea on average waiting times.

I hope your wait isn't too long and best wishes for your surgery.

Re: Public System - Waiting List

Hi jenwa,

I'm doing well now thanks. I'm still taking it very easy and not doing too much as the body lets you know when you have overdone it! (I have found that one out for sure!)

It's good that you have got your date quickly, you won't have too much time to think about it.

Good luck for Monday 22nd, I hope it all goes well for you.
