surgical menopause after SAH

I am scheduled to have a SAH on 6/13 because of endo., pelvic pain, and possible adeno. I am 36 years old and have been suffering for many years and have finally made the decision to have a hysterectomy. Despite the fact that I have endo (I have had several surgeries for the endo) I am keeping everything except my uterus, because I did fine while taking birthcontrol pills consistently but suffered from daily migraines.

However, my three concerns which I am sure are not major but I need to know to put my mind at ease. (1) Did anyone experience surgical menopause even if they kept their ovaries and cervix, if so how long? (2)Was there a problem with weight gain despite keeping everything except their uterus? and finally and most importantly (3) Was your sex life affected negatively due to surgery?

All answers and input are greatly appreciated. I am so scared waiting for this surgery.

S

It is possible for the ovaries to either go to sleep for a period of time, or to quit altogether as a result of a hyst. When that happens it's because the blood supply has been disrupted. I have read that a woman who has a hyst and keeps her ovaries probably will go into menopause around 5 years earlier than they would have without the hyst.

I had a TAH/BSO. I weigh almost exactly the same today as I did before my surgery more than 3 years ago. And for me, sex is the same now as it was before surgery.

Best wishes.

ps: please update your profile and add your surgery date so you will be on the calendar and we can be sure to send you special good wishes as your date approaches. It also makes it easier to reply to posts by being able to see if you’re pre or post op, and by how much. Thanks!

surgical menopause after SAH

Had my SAH on April 5th. I still have one ovary, and YES it is still working. I had PMS right on schedule (for me breast tenderness and oily face). So far, my weight is the same as before surgery. Unfortunately, unable to advise concerning sex, since I have not been cleared. The good news, I am really looking forward to it. So, the desire is there, just not able to act on the desire yet.
