Should i have a Pre-op?

So - my surg is dec 5. I saw my dr on nov 6 and scheduled it. But ive not heard from anyone regarding pre-op anything. Should i have a pre-op for blood tests and things? I dont even know what time im supposed to b at the hospital the day of or anything. Should i be calling to get specifics or will they call me?

Getting really nervous!

Re: Should i have a Pre-op?

They usually do the pre-op stuff a day or two before the surgery. Each hospital does things a little differently. Don't hesitate to call and talk to your doctor's office. The nurse should be able to give you a general idea of when you'll be going in and what to expect.

Re: Should i have a Pre-op?

I had to have a couple of blood tests done pre-op. I would call the hosptial and ask if they need to see you for a pre-op appointment. Some do need to see you and others don't. Also call your doctors office and ask them do you need to have anything done before surgery.

I also would suggest calling the Dr's office and speaking to a nurse as well as the hospital. They each have their own system, but I called to ease my mind and to make sure everything was in order.

Re: Should i have a Pre-op?

I would definitely call and ask. I had to have blood tests, EKG (within 3 months), chest x ray, and clearance from my internal medicine doctor for anesthesia. Also included in the packet from my surgeon was all of the pre op instructions. I was having surgery at a hospital 2.5 hours from my home as it would have been March before he could have done it here in town (and with a cancer diagnosis, I certainly didn't want to wait that long!).

Re: Should i have a Pre-op?

My surgery is also Dec 5th and my pre-op with both my doc and the hospital for bloodwork and paperwork is tomorrow. I think its strange you don't have pre-op scheduled when we are so close now. I would call your doc and enquire.

Re: Should i have a Pre-op?

So -i called the hosp and they told me to call my dr. I called there and had to leave a msg. Hopefully theyll call back. Im just worried cuz if i need to do a bowel prep the day before or something, or have to go get blood work... i may need part of that day off work. I also have a 9 year old to make arrangements for.

Re: Should i have a Pre-op?

I got my surgery date for my LAVH for Dec 10th and I am having pre op testing on Dec 5th.. I honestlly am VERY surprised with the amount of testing I need to have done...Including an EKG,, I am a breast cancer fighter/survivor ( had a total mastectomy on May 21,012) I didnt need any pre op testing before this...Can anyone tell me why so much testing is required? Thank you so much...

Re: Should i have a Pre-op?

My pre-op included a full history, weight, vitals, and labwork. Was given instructions for the day before and day of surgery on what meds to take, how to use the surgical wash, and to then found out they wont even tell me what time to show up until the day before surgery. I am not required to do a bowel prep but was told to eat lightly and take a zantac the night before and morning of surgery with a sip of water but nothing else after midnight.

Re: Should i have a Pre-op?

My pre op was on the 26th, surg the 31st. I had bloodwork. EKG, pregnancy test and an opportunity to ask questions. The pre op nurse was way more informative than my doctor!
