Hernia - and I was doing so well :(

I was sitting in my recliner last night, minding my own business, when I felt a strange pressure/tugging sort of sensation. I knew straight away what it was. I put my hand down and felt the left hand incision down on my groin, and sure enough, there's a lovely little bulge under it. I've got a hernia. It wouldn't be so bad if I'd been doing something I shouldn't have been doing, but I was just sitting there. No fair!!

I was born with a double hernia in my groin, one of which strangulated when I was 7. I was very sick and nearly died. That's why I knew straight away what this was. It's really quite odd that 38 years later, the sensation was so familiar. It doesn't really hurt. It gets a bit achey and there's this wierd tingly/pressure/tuggy sensation, but no real pain. I'm scared of it strangulating, because I remember the agony of that only too well. I need to get this seen to quickly.

And I was doing so well, too. Everything was going great. Pain is negligible and what I have is easily managed with paracetamol and ibuprofen. My appetite has returned and I'm eating normally and having good BMs. I've been getting tired from doing just little things, but that is to be expected and no real problem. So the same day that I text a friend and tell her how lucky I am and how lightly I've gotten off, this happens. Not happy AT ALL!!!

I guess I will need surgery to fix it. I know it will only be a minor surgery, but surgery none the less. The incision is less than half an inch long, so it's only a very small hernia. I'm wondering if they'll even be able to fix it under local rather than a GA. I'm seeing my GP this afternoon just to have it officially confirmed, and I suppose we'll work out where we need to go from there.

*sigh* What a pain in the butt!!!

I am so sorry you have to have another surgery to fix this. I will keep you in my prayers. Keep us updated as to what the dr's tell you. I am also glad to hear that you were healing so well.

Re: Hernia - and I was doing so well :(

Been to hospital and had and ultrasound. No hernia. Incapsulated seroma or haematoma which is a build up of fluid or blood under the incision. It hurts, but apparently nothing to worry about. There's a chance it could get infected or need draining, but for now, it just means managing the pain and hoping for the best. Almost would have preferred it to be a hernia so it could be repaired and that would be the end of it. But there ya go

Did they give you pain medication to ease the pain? At least you don't have to have another surgery right now. I am on bed rest for 3 weeks because I have a muscle tear and he said that it could herniate if I am not careful. Definitely wasn't the news I wanted to hear today. Still praying for you hun.

Re: Hernia - and I was doing so well :(

Sorry to hear about your muscle tear. That must be so disappointing and frustrating.

They were very unsympathetic at the hospital (the doctors, that is. The nurses and other support staff were lovely) and very uninformative. I got no info or pain meds or anything. I still have some pain meds left from surgery cos I didn't need them for long, but am seeing my GP tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully she will prescribe more pain meds and be able to give me some information on this seroma/haematoma. I'd really like to know stuff like how long will it take to resolve itself if it's going to, what will need to be done if it doesn't and how long they will leave it to do something if it doesn't fix itself. It's really frustrating to not have the info I feel I need >

I really hope you heal up quickly and don't have any further complications. It seems the same type of problems can occur with either abdo or laparoscopic surgery, but with abdo, they are much worse because of the size of the incision. Please make sure you rest properly and give that muscle tear time to heal properly. *hugz*

Thank you. I understand how you feel. Our ER here is the same way. They never tell you what you need to know. I don't go unless I absolutely have to go. I hope you heal up quickly as well.
