overweight before hysterectomy, getting back in shape

hi, i was overweight before surgery, 12/28. and now feel like a double whammy has hit me,

i get so tired when i walk, so i dont go, but today went out for about 15 min, and feel tired, i am writing down my food, but sometimes eat at night before bed, and when i cant sleep, i feel like i am making poor progress, but know what i need to do, i am turning into a couch potato, watching tv, which i never did before surgery,

plan to go out this afternoon, and do something productive, anyone in the same situation, would love to hear from you, otherwise, i am healing well, and back to work in one week,

Re: overweight before hysterectomy, getting back in shape

I just wanted to encourage you! I was (am) overweight before surgery and luckily, I had begun exercising a bit before. I think that made my recovery easier.

Take it easy and ok everything with your doctor. I over-did it my first day back exercising and was in total pain in my abdomen for a week! Lesson learned...

Good luck! I wish you the best. It's amazing how much better I feel after surgery and if you're in the same boat, you'll be fine.

Re: overweight before hysterectomy, getting back in shape

it is still early for you, just one month after surgery. i'm 6 weeks out, and i feel a lot better than at one month. soooo keep up the good efforts !
if the 15 minute walk is too much, how about just 10 minutes in the morning and another 10 in the afternoon? I read in a magazine to try to exercise during the commercials on tv : you could walk around the room or just step in place.
please keep up your good intentions! but be careful, don't overdo it, and if
you are taking meds, your balance or coordination could be affected, so be cautious. hope to hear good things from you

Re: overweight before hysterectomy, getting back in shape

I am in the same boat, overweight. I need to lose 60 pounds. Last night I wanted Onion rings so instead I crabbed 2 carrots and ate them. I try to walk but don't always do it. The other day I walked and then did a tour of a 8 story building my husband is thinking of investing in no elevator. Later that day was sore, still am by night I am hobbling, the my inner incision started itching like crazy, it does this when I overdue it. I now know why my doctor said no horse riding for a year, it takes a long time for the inside to heal. Just don't over do I am at 4 months and still get tired. You have the rest of your live to loose weight.

Re: overweight before hysterectomy, getting back in shape

I figure that before my op I could have stood to lose 35# Now I'm looking at 40#. I would not advocate any calorie cutting during initial recovery. I eat whatever I want, I'm healing. But, after I pass the 6 week mark and talk to my doc, I'm planning to just get very serious about healthy eating and regular exercise.

Re: overweight before hysterectomy, getting back in shape

what about walking at the mall?it would take your mind off the boredom and it still counts as activity.i also have found that an i-pod helps if i am walking in the neighbourhood- i am a creature of habit so if i can get myself to do something for a month then it will become part of my routine...having said that all i've done so far is walk around the block day?weeka couple of times a-you are still early look towards a few weeks from now and build uup to it.

Re: overweight before hysterectomy, getting back in shape

I had been working out prior to surgery and was loosing the weight. Then had a longer recovery from surgery than I expected and gained all of the weight I had lost back. Six months after surgery I am finally able to exercise on a more regular basis. I tried to go back at the 8 wk mark and was in too much pain. I tried again at 3 months and 4 months. Then the holidays came which made it impossible . Just don't do too much too soon. Take it easy when you exericse. My doctor said that the body can take up to a full year to fully recover. At 6 months out I believe her. I still have days where I am exhausted and tire easily.

Re: overweight before hysterectomy, getting back in shape

Oh yes! I 2nd the iPod idea. In fact, you can download walking (or aerobic, or weight lifting, or yoga, whatever floats your boat) direct from iTunes. I just completed the longest mile of my life! Wish I woulda started with flat mall cruising. Oh well, now I'm done for the day I guess.

Re: overweight before hysterectomy, getting back in shape

Hi ladies! I wanted to give all of you some encouragement. Remember it takes time to gain weight - so it takes time to lose it too!! I commend you all for trying especially at this difficult time in your life. Writing down what you eat is GREAT, its ok to eat even right before bed as long as you don't go over your calories for the day. As far as walking - it is great exercise! That said don't beat yourself up if you can't go everyday. Vary your routine as much as you can - the mall walking idea is a great one! Again, keep a log of your exercises too - show someone to hold you accountable and also to give you praise when you move up to a new goal. It took me 4 years to lose 45lbs and I have kept it off for 2 years. I am by no means a diet or fitness expert but I'd be happy to help in any way I can. Keep it up!!

Re: overweight before hysterectomy, getting back in shape

I concur with the walking. I lost 35 lbs before surgery by walking and have kept it off. That took me a year and a half. I need to drop another 10 or so but by watching what I eat and keeping up with the walking, I know it will come off.
