9 days to go, can i take advil

Hi! I have nine days to go and my mind has apparantly vacated the building.Forgetting so many things that it is scary.I have a splitting head right now and my body is really hurting! Is it ok to take advil? I forgot to ask the dr. if I was supposed to stop taking advil ahead of time.My period has just started today so it will be a really rough week if i cannot take anything. Thank you for all your postings and for keeping me slightly sane!!

Hi!

I'm sorry your head & body hurt. Most drs do not want you to take any antiinflammatories prior to surgery because of the possibility of losing too much blood because these meds cause the blood to thin. Something like Tylenol may be ok instead. You should call your dr's office and ask what they recommend. I hope you feel better!

If I'm not mistaken, Advil contains ibuprofen, and that's on the list of things you can't take before surgery. Try Tylenol.....that contains no aspirin. One way to be sure of what is allowed would be to call your doctor or your pharmacist.

I can relate to the headache thing! I had one the weekend before my surgery and I had to call my doctor to find out what I could take. Good thing I called as I was going to take a Motrin and he told me just take Tylenol. Please call and check!

Hang in there wandmr!
Have to agree with the ladies here. Advil is generally a no-no, but your doctor can tell you for sure. Tylenol is usually the only pain control allowed. Doctors will differ in opinion though in how close to surgery time it should be discontinued. Good luck to you!

Hi!

Hi! Sorry to hear you're not feeling good. I checked with the preop people and they said I could take extra strength Tylenol and I am taking Vioxx for inflammation of the sciatic nerve. They said it's okay and aalso checked with my pharmasist.
Hope this helps

My docs also told me no ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin before surgery. Tylenol was an option but I get splitting headaches too. My family doctor gave me some Darvocet for the headaches, it contains the same ingredient as Tylenol but has the 'punch' of a narcotic painkiller. It worked great and I didn't have any side effects from it except a little sleepiness, which was okay since I was also flipping out those last weeks before surgery!

Let your doctors know ALL medications, vitamins and supplements you are taking, there are herbs and even some vitamins that aren't too good to take close to surgery (a lot of mutivitamins contain herbal extracts these days).

Good luck with your surgery and I hope you find something that works for your aches and pains in the meantime.

Hello everyone. thank you for all the helpfull information. it is now night time here and my head is still pounding. I am like you Denise. the tylenol has not helped even a weeny bit. I think for the past few years i have made the advil people very wealthy ! I am now running a very hot bath and am going to soak till i turn to a prune.Hopefully that will make it die to a dull roar. Thanks and good night ladies!!!

Wanda,

Is your husband home? Have him take and give you a message on the back of your neck below the skull bone.

I will try to explain as best as I can: Tilt your head forward, have husband take one hand and put on your forehead (To help you relax) relax, have him take other hand and between thumb and index finger rub the back of your neck below the skull bone. Do that for at least 10 minutes and that should help your headache go away. It has worked for me.
