Being in shape vs. not to help recovery?

Hi Ladies!

I do yoga and walk daily. I was wondering if being in shape helps the recovery process and the pain?
I have never had surgery so I don't have anything to compare.

Thank you! ,

Re: Being in shape vs. not to help recovery?

Hi Jivan

Being in shape certainly does not hurt... I also am a walker - I love to walk - and am in moderately good shape!

Everyone is different with recovery, but know that this is a tough surgery and healing takes lots of time. At first all you will be able to do is take brief, frequent walks. Slowly build on this, but don't overdo it or you can give yourself a set back. Listen carefully to your body. Remember, you only get one chance to heal right.

My recovery was a piece of cake. I asked my surgeon if that was the result of her excellent surgical technique or what. She said it was because I was in such good shape.

Re: Being in shape vs. not to help recovery?

I breezed through my TAH. I'm giving some of the credit to my strong core. I'm overweight, but with my workout buddies, I'm the Queen of the Crunches ... (honestly, I enjoy the fact that you get to lay down to do them) I really credit my strong core with making it so easy to get out of bed. Either that or I'm just insanely lucky. No trouble ever getting out of bed or walking. Hoping the best for you!

Re: Being in shape vs. not to help recovery?

Well i am certainly not in shape, have a desk job and don't do any exercise .. I had a great recovery with minimal pain. Then again i was very careful during my recovery and obeyed docs orders. So in my case I would have to think it was a good surgeon. Seriously though.. There are too many factors to consider with surgery - both doc and patient, but being in shape and healthy is always a good thing!!

Re: Being in shape vs. not to help recovery?

I had TAH with vertical incision. I am in horrible shape due to nit being physically able to workout prior to surgery due to everything going on with this old body. And if I am being completely honest, I have an insane sweet tooth. Anyways, I was 4 weeks post yesterday and have had a very nice recovery so far. Went back to work Tuesday. Sleeping well and very little pain. So I think I probably just got lucky.
