Possibilities such as fibroids?

Hello everyone. I don't know if this is the correct spot for this post but here goes.

I am a 55 y/o woman whose last period was in June of 2011, when I was 54 (birthday in April). I will be 56 in three months. I was in FL at the end of October while my mom passed away in hospice. I live in NY. She hung in for nine days, for which I spent 12+ hours a day in her room with her. While down there, I had a 24-hour episode of vaginal bleeding. I was more concerned with what was going on with the obvious, so wore a minipad and carried on. This past Dec. of 2012, the bleeding reoccurred and lasted this time about four days, a bit heavier. At that point, I knew this was something I had to have checked out.

I saw my OBGYN, actually a NP, this past Sat. After doing an internal, she said she didn't feel anything but prolapse of my bladder and uterus (had HUGE babies) and gave me an endo biopsy. Today I went for a pelvic sono; and although they can't give me the results, the sonographer said I still have fibroids (plural) but not large anymore. I used to have them so big that I was put on pain pills - and I'm not one to take pills.

My question is, is it possible that fibroids can cause the bleeding such as I described above? This waiting is very difficult, and I'm trying not to research online because sometimes you end up reading things that are scary and don't even apply to you. But I am trying to come up with (maybe rationalize) a reason why this is happening that isn't too serious.

I am pretty sure I will have to have the hysterectomy when this is all over due to the prolapse situation. I had two 10+ lb. sons and an 8 lb. 11 oz. daughter. Guess they took their toll on my insides, as well as my skin on my tummy also.
