Does general anesthesia make you feel sick when waking up?

I was in the same boat as you, never had surgery, was not sure if I would get nauseaus (sp?) or not. What I did know was that my Mom always got sick after any procedure where she was "out" and I get motion sick very easily. I alerted the anesthesiologist to these facts and she put something in the IV and a patch behind my ear. I never felt sick!
Good luck to you!!

Does general anesthesia make you feel sick when waking up?

I never even get nauseated. My nurse put a anit-nausea patch behind my ear before surgery. I have only been in surgery 3 other times and never got sick...not even nauseated. However, my face itched like crazy. Not sure what that was?!

Does general anesthesia make you feel sick when waking up?

Probably morphine or any opiate based drugs. I itch like crazy while on morphine and it gets worse as I stop taking it. Benadryl will help, I just tell them I itch and they give you something for it. And I am taking my anti itch creams too because just to help. I like the pain relief the itching can drive you mad. I get the shivers too, but I also get car sick and can feel sick to my stomach a lot. I am going to make sure they know about the itching and the sick to my stomach feeling. Laying down perfectly flat bugs me too. I'm a nut case!! LOL

I think they can give you things to help though. Good luck. Any idea when you will get a date Luvs?

Does general anesthesia make you feel sick when waking up?

I never had any nausea or vomiting post-op. I drank some water not long after I was in room and when nurse saw I had water bottle she said I wasn't supposed to drink anything because I might get sick. I responded that no one had told me not to drink anything. Even after drinking the water I was fine. But as "they" say, everyone is and reacts different.

Does general anesthesia make you feel sick when waking up?

I have never felt nauseous from anesthesia. I believe for me, the emptier my stomach is ahead of time, the better. I found this out when I had gall bladder surgery. I had gone about 36 hrs without eating (not by choice) before that surgery and felt pretty good coming out of anesthesia. So when I knew I was having my hysterectomy. I did the same. Just liquids for about 36 hrs before. I was a little nervous for the surgery, so I didn't have much of an appetite anyway. On the other hand, I sat next to my husband holding the bedpan up to his mouth after his hernia surgery. But he was the type that had to have that "last meal" at midnight the day before surgery!

glow8490,

I have had several day procedures where they put you to sleep. Mostly like wisdom teeth being taken out, cataract surgery where they put you in a twilight sleep, stuff like that. When I woke up I felt good. I don't know if the stuff they give to put you out for a hysterectomy is any different, but I know I won't feel like eating anyway. And I'll drink as much water as I can. When my nerves bother me I can't eat.

Sorry to hear that your husband got sick. I can't imagine eating anything at midnight the day before surgery. Maybe a little water, but a big meal would kill me. Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it.
