Not sure why chemo??

Hi my name is Cornelia and I'm lucky that my surgery (abdominal hysterectomy) proved I had ovarian cancer (early discovery) in both ovaries as well as in the mass. The Dr said she thinks she got it all and the kidney scan and fatty tissue were clean so why would I need chemo? I had surgery Sept 11; coughing is very painfull. Can this develop into another type of cancer?

Re: Not sure why chemo??

6 rounds of chemo is often the treatment of choice in early ovarian cancer. They can't always be sure that microscopic cells aren't still in your lymph system.

She is offering preventive chemo. I took the chemo, even though they thought they had gotten all the ovarian cancer, because I simply wanted to make sure, if it came back, I had done everything possible to combat it.

Ask your doctor why she feels you need the chemo.

Re: Not sure why chemo??

I agree that this apparently is preventative chemo which appears to be the norm with early ovarian cancer. Pls talk with yourr gyn/onc and express any concerns, ask questions, etc. to give you better peace of mind. It always seems best to go prepared with a written list of questions as these type of discussions can be disconcerting. Good luck and pls keep us updated.

Re: Not sure why chemo??

I don't think I have ever heard of anyone having ovarian cancer without chemo being recommending as a follow up after surgery! This stuff is sneaky and is small. The doctor is trying to give you every chance you can have to keep it at bay.

Take care.

CB
I have a similar situation that I am proceeding with chemo. It is more of a preventive chemo as well as there is no reason to think there is any cancer still in my body. For me, it is worth it for my peace of mind, ovarian cancer is sneaky as BlueArtemis said. Good luck & keep us posted!
Hugs!
