How to handle partner having to help me after hysterectomy

I went home yesterday after a failed DaVinci....they had to do abdominal instead. This means now a COMPLETELY different recovery plan. So, my planning ahead ....changed drastically. I do have the three incisions from the Da Vinci...and have no pain there, so I would've been great. Now, I can barely move...I bought a FLEETs suppository which has an applicator for your partner to use..I used it and had a mini bowel movement yesterday. Been moving as much as I can. Getting out of bed and using bathroom difficult. Using recliner more often.
My question is: how do I handle a partner who is getting impatient and angry that she has to help me mire than what we planned? We didn't know the type of help I would need for a full abdominal hysterectomy...we were not prepared for that. I have the incisions from the robotic attempt and they don't bother me at all. I'm feeling like I have totally inconvenienced my partner now and have no family to help.

Re: How to handle partner having to help me

I'm sorry that you are experiencing this. You need to be able to heal with as little stress and worrying as possible. Perhaps your partner needs a gentle reminder that love is about helping each other and you never know when she could need extra help and support and you would be there for her and that you are disappointed that she isn't able to be your rock of support. Also realizing that this surgery affects your hormones and I was quite emotional and sensitive for the first few weeks too. Good luck to you! Remember that you only have one chance to heal right and in a few months this will all be behind you and you will be feeling great!

Re: How to handle partner having to help me

I know it's disappointing that your surgery changed, but you seem to be doing really well. The first couple days are the hardest. Aside from a friends taking me to the store and doctor, I managed on my own. Perhaps rent some movies to watch together or playing a game can restore good humor. It's an opportunity to grow closer. Being in a relationship is not just about the good times. Sometimes people are fearful and don't understand what a major surgery like this really means. I was driving short distances at 2 weeks after my checkup and everywhere at 3 weeks, so it just depends.

Re: How to handle partner having to help me after hysterectomy

Thanks for the words of wisdom....I have had chats with her regarding that I would do it for her etc. I think it's more that she didn't think it would happen thing.also, when she had gastric bypass surgery her mom took care of her and she was the fastest patient to return to work. She also has had three kids and her tubes tied. She's used to this ...this is my only major surgery in my life....the ablation didn't really feel like a surgery at all..I've talked to her best friend and she has been talking to her today and my partner seems to be calming down. We also have assigned the teenage daughter to help as well!

Re: How to handle partner having to help me after hysterectomy

Some how you two need to have a talk and work this out. You need positive vibes and support in the house in order to heal. It will certainly be a good test of your relationship. Things don't always work out as we think. It is not your fault the original surgery failed.
Try to stay calm and do what you can for yourself. In the meantime, if you work, you will need to contact them, as your recovery will be much longer, and you will need more time. The most important piece of advice I can give is rest, rest, rest, and do NOT start doing housework, lifting, bending, reaching, etc. You need to be taking care and taking the time to heal now. Review your discharge papers and follow them to a T!!!!
Good luck!
