Severe endo - does it come back post op?

I am four weeks post op and wondering what others have experienced in regard to return of severe endo? I had 10cm endometrioma, extensive recto vaginal endo and bilaterial endo, with extensive adhesions, bowel severely kinked over and attached to uterus pre-op. I am 44 and this was my first surgery (I just thought all that period pain was normal, because I'd always had it - silly me!). Because periods were 7-9 days and very heavy a routine blood test revealed I was anaemic (haemoglobin 90), which was when investigations began revealing endometrioma, and total hysterectomy was the outcome. The endometriosis has infiltrated too deeply into bowel etc and it was too risky to remove so doctor advised that some endo still remains. Doctor said I will not be pain free because of this. Is anyone else out there in a similar position, and further down the track to advise on how they feel now - did the operation make you feel better long term, or did your endo come back significantly, what about pain - less or the same?

Severe endo - does it come back post op?

Hi Chryseis

I had my hyst because of endo also. I'm about 3 1/2 months post op and can honestly say I have no endo pain. According to my DR, that is mostly due to the lack of estrogen. I had my ovaries removed to stop my estrogen production ~ estrogen feeds endo ~ without estrogen, a lot of the endo "dies off". Some women also go through some type or hormone therapy to "kill" the endo after a hyst. There is always a possibility that the endo can come back ~ sad but true.
Good luck to you and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Thanks for that, and great to hear you are pain free. I still have my ovaries so guess I'll have to wait and see...
