To keep Ovaries

When I first saw my Surgeon she said she was going to remove my Ovaries. When I saw her yesterday for my Needle Biopsy. She said she wasn't going to remove them. I've had a few people tell me I should have her remove them. I've got a 2 inch Dermoid Cyst on each Ovary.

I need some advice.

To keep Ovaries

Hi Denise!

We usually advise members to keep healthy ovaries. I don't know if yours sound so "healthy" though.

If I were in your position I would ask your doctor to explain to you exactly why she has changed her mind about keeping your ovaries, from your first appointment with her to the most recent one. Since she is your physician I would expect that she should answer all of your questions and concerns about this. Keep asking until she does!

I would ask the doctor to identify for you the pros and cons of each option as well as explain to you why she changed her mind. I would thing this should be your decision, but you need complete information. Also, if this surgeon is not your regular gynecologist, you may want to ask your gynecologist for a recommendation.

To keep Ovaries

My ovaries are coming out due to the endometriosis. But I would definitely ask the doctor why she changed her mind.

To keep Ovaries

Was she expecting a different kind of cyst before the biopsy? Is she going to remove them, or leave them since that kind of cyst is almost always benign? My doctor is very much for keeping healthy ovaries in order to avoid the need for HRT. Perhaps your doctor feels the same way.

To keep Ovaries

Hi Denise

I would definitely be asking your Dr why she changed her mind. I am keeping mine but an MRI and a Laparoscopy show that they are healthy. Your age should also be taken into consideration, I am 43 and have a couple of years to go before the menopause hits?!?! My Ob/Gyn who is also my surgeon said in general under the age of 47 he would prefer to leave them provided they are healthy.

Take care
