Using insurance benefits before the end of the year

Hello all! I have a TAH scheduled for Jan. 9, 2015. My husband's job is changing to a new insurance carrier so we have to start all over with the deductible and all that insurance stuff. My husband had surgery last month and my daughter this month, so we have met our deductible as well as almost meeting the out of pocket amount. Talking to my husband we decided I should see if I can reschedule the surgery for next month to use the benefits before the end of the year. Now I am terrified at the thought of having the surgery so soon. I feel like I won't have enough time to prepare, then Christmas is coming up and we usually go to my parent's house for Christmas Eve, but I know I won't be able to travel even though it's only an hour away. I hope it can be rescheduled for the financial aspect of it and to rid this uterus which has decided to go completely crazy since I got my first surgery date confirmed, you know, the labor type contractions cramps, heavy bleeding, feeling like pure crap! But if I keep the initial date I have more time to prepare. Is this silly for me to even think about waiting if I don't have too? I was diagnosed with enlarged Uterus, tipped Uterus, at least one fibroid, and possibly adenomyosis earlier this year.

Re: Using insurance benefits before the end of the year

I understand your dilemma. The financial aspect is important, but equally or more important is the your mindset about having the surgery. It's major surgery and you need to be prepared to put most of your life on hold for a few weeks.

I wonder if you could reschedule the date to December, and then change it again if you don't feel ready. I believe that feeling ready is very important. Best of luck to you!

Do you have the option of specifying an amount of your pay to be pre-taxes for medical expenses? I cannot remember what it is called, but last winter I had my hysterectomy and chemo in 2013, but had to start over paying the insurance deductible for the radiation that was in 2014 calendar year.
I specified the maximum possible (I think it was 2,500.00) and that amount was paid to me as soon as I got the medical bills, which covered almost all my deductible, and then my employer deducts the 2500 from my pay in small amounts spread over the whole year.
So it worked really well for me, I'd actually forgotten about it, so now I realize I'll feel like I get a raise in January when I no longer have to be paying that!
