Catheter?

While reading my pre op paperwork.. I found them talking about two different kinds of catheters.. a Foley catheter which is placed the way you would expect, in the urethra, and a Suprapubic Catheter, 'put through a hole in your lower belly'. I'm a little confused. Why two kinds of catheters? Do they use one or the other, or both? Why would you need the Suprapubic one? (Though I gotta admit, I've had the other kind, this kind sounds more comfortable)

The suprapubic catheter may be used if you're having some type of bladder repair. They're not commonly used for just hysterectomies.

You might want to give your doctor a call to clarify which type you will have, just to ease your mind.

Hi, I had only the foley catheter. And only for one day, it was removed the morning after my surgery.

Here's a defination of a suprapubic catheter :
What is it? A suprapubic (soup-ruh-pew-bik) catheter is a rubber tube put inside your bladder where urine is stored in your body. The catheter is put through a long-term hole in your lower abdominal (belly) wall called a stoma. The catheter empties your bladder so you will not urinate the normal way using a toilet or bedpan.
