5 years post hysterectomy (2002) Is it possible to lose weight after a complete hysterectomy?

If you're new to exercise, try Curves -- it's welcoming, women only, and accommodates women of all fitness levels. Now that I'm post-op, I'm becoming anxious to get back, if for no other reason than to walk parts of the circuit, as well as the machines that don't involve lifting. Hopefully I can start back after the new year.

Re: Is it possible to lose weight after a complete hysterectomy?

Well you ladies weight a LOT less than I am. I was 185lb pre total hysterectomy and now almost 3 weeks later I am 175 my height is 5.5. Still too fat and now watching what I eat. I am not sure if it's possible to lose weight effectively as we could pre hysterectomy when we had estrogen and progesterone (two hormones) now with both ovaries removed and I am not taking any hormone supplements I just intake lesser food.

The good thing was when I had my surgery I did not eat for 4 days straight and I wasn't even hungry. Now I do get hungry but I picked for myself 3 small plates and whatever doesn't fit on that plate I don't eat.

I eat in morning a mixture of fruits (strawbarries with non fat yogurt and non fat Kashi fiber flakes) I just make 1 cup. For lunch I eat a small portion of salad with tiny non fat thin sliced chicen breast and for dinner I eat a few fruits (a peach or 2 apricots or an orange). I drink non sweet iced tea or plain water.

So far my weight is jumping from 173 to 176.2 in a day but hopefully soon it will come down to 160's. Since now my stomach doesn't require so much food, I can eat small (tiny) portions and be fine. I don't eat pork and don't drink any soft drinks either.

Would like to know what do others eat who don't have hormone supplements and how are they losing weight? When my wound will heal more (I had an abdominal incision) I will ride my bike (can't wait) maybe one day I'll get back to my "pre-marriage" size 4 dress size. My goal is to get to size 8 at least (atm I wam size 14 but pre surgery was size 16). Keeping my fingers crossed

Re: Is it possible to lose weight after a complete hysterectomy?

I'm coming upon my 2 year hysterversary and I gained about 25 pounds since then. I wish someone would've told me to be prepared to buy all new clothes after the surgery. I haven't changed my eating habits in 2 years and I'm wondering what is the average weight gain after surgery keeping ovaries.

Re: Is it possible to lose weight after a complete hysterectomy?

I'm actually having the opposite problem. I've lost 17 pounds since my surgery 6 months ago. My appetite has changed dramatically and not in a good way. It hurts almost every time I eat. I have so much indegestion. I typically only eat once maybe twice a day at most. I just figured its a side affect from the surgery.

(I think effexor actually decreases most people's appetites, so don't be alarmed if you are taking this.) The weight gain has finally stopped so now I want to focus on getting it off.

I'm trying to find out what is good for women who have had a total hysterectomy and take no hrt. My metabolism feels non-existent. i never had a weight problem before this. I can find regular diet and exercise information, but is there something special us hyster-women can do? I've never been a dieter, but I still had an idea of what worked for me. But this new body has a mind of it's own and I don't know what to do with it. Please help!
OMG! I hadn't read anything (yet) about gaining weight after the surgery until I read your post. I had my full abdominal hysterectomy one year ago (as of today) and have packed on nearly 20 lbs! I'm doing nothing different than pre-surgery, but the pounds are just piling on and I feel miserable with the added weight. I was already overweight, at 5'1" 172#. So I'm up to 190# now and scared to death that I won't be able to stop this. I don't eat much already and usually get around to having two meals/day. Can't do much for exercise because I have a reverse-arch neck, arthritic lower back, multiple ruptured discs, sciatica in both hips (from late-in-life pregnancies), fasciitis in both feet and carpal tunnel in both wrists. I can walk the neighborhood though.

I have NEVER dieted, but am trying the Garcinia Cambogia right now (1 week now). I lost 3# in one week, but can't say it's from the Garcinia necessarily, since I also started drinking a TON of water, which I've never been able to do because it causes a cauliflower-looking growth in my throat. We'll see if the spring water works out for me. It's definitely frustrating to just pack on the pounds for no good reason!!

I had to take Carafate (rx) to make mine stop hurting, but I didn't lose weight like you did - wish I had that problem!! I didn't have to take it very long. It's liquid form. Best of luck.

Re: Is it possible to lose weight after a complete hysterectomy?

Hi Ladies! Since I first became ill about a year ago,I have lost about 35 pounds. I am 5ft 7 and am 57. I haven't been on a diet but have just tried to change the way I eat. Basically, I've stopped eating processed food and rubbish.I eat stacks of fresh fruit and veg,low fat Greek yoghurt, wholewheat bread and feel much better for it.Before,I could eat a whole bar of chocolate without thinking so i stopped eating it at all ,don't miss it now. There's no magic formula, just substitute the good stuff for the bad stuff until it becomes a habit. I've been on Efexor for years. Good Luck.

Re: Is it possible to lose weight after a complete hysterectomy?

It's been nine months and change for me, and I notice that my weight hasn't changed but my girth has. My belly is much bigger and some pants just don't fit. And I have started doing exercise, much more than before my operation.

Re: Is it possible to lose weight after a complete hysterectomy?

Do you have a link for the Mediterraen diet? I have put on nearly 50 pounds in the last 11 months. I'm sick of it. I walk, I watch what I eat....the only except to carbs being Sunday morning breakfast when we go to Einstein brothers for bagel w/ lox schmear....I haven't even been eating Challa on Shabot. No clear carbs, mostly veggies and fruit, a bit of meat, or chicken or fish. I don't understand why with a good diet and walking I'm gaining weight, not even maintaining a balance, just ugh!!!

Re: Is it possible to lose weight after a complete hysterectomy?

In the last 80s I was on trazadone for depression which caused me to go from 150 to 220. I finally went to a new doctor who said it was the trazadone and changed me to Prozac. The weight gain stopped but I was never able to loose any of it no matter how much exercise. My daughter and I use to ride bikes over 100 miles a week and all I did was build muscle under the fat. In 2008 my husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and I put on 40 more pounds the first two years. I am only 5'3".

I am finally loosing. I started a little after the D&C in March and have managed to loose a little more since my hysterectomy. Between the D&C and hysterectomy I started walking 2 miles a day - thought being in better shape would make recovery easier and I think it helped. According to the doctors scales on the 30th I was at 249 which is a loss of a loss of 16 pounds from a high of 265 in February. Never been able to loose before but am trying now and I am only walking a mile occasionally since it is in the 100s every day.

So it can be done. I am having a diet drink for breakfast since I am usually not up until 10, then a sandwich or hot pocket for lunch - no more chips; much on veggies or fruit usually around 4 cause my stomach starts yelling; dinner is a big bowl of salad and if room, a protein. At night for snack I have a fiber one bar. I drink water, crystal light green tea/peach/mango and diet pepsi. How long the weight loss will keep up I don't know, just hope it does. Would love to get down to 150 but my first goal is 220 where I was when my husband was diagnosed.
