travel 2.5 weeks post op

Hopefully someone post op will answer since I can't post there. My da Vinci surgery is December 6 and my husband is hoping we will still be able to travel to Michigan to see his family at Christmas (we would leave December 26 and travel 12 hours by car). I've read a lot of stories about women having trouble sitting for long periods for a while after the surgery. Should I just tell my husband now it's not going to happen? Or would it be possible for me to travel like that, since this surgery type is supposed to be faster recovery?

Re: travel 2.5 weeks post op

I am not sure.We were going to travel about the same time as you are but its a 6-7 hr trip. We aren't now but its not due to the surgery. My hubby's son who is in the Navy is coming in for a visit. So my MIL is coming to see us instead.12 hrs is a long time.If you can afford it and persuade your hubby as well...Maybe drive half stop for the night and then finish the next day. Just an idea.Good luck to ya. My surgery is Dec.3rd. so I am only a few days ahead of ya.

Re: travel 2.5 weeks post op

Everybodys recovery is different. I had Dvh and just got released for work. I know at 2 1/2 weeks I would not be able to be in a car that long.
Remember even though it is being done Robotically this is still major surgery and you have to treat your recovery as such.

Re: travel 2.5 weeks post op

Hysterlone:
I am 6 days post davinci, removal of everything but left ovary. I truly feel fine to be upright, sitting, standing, walking for most of my day.. I am flying from PA to AZ in one week, and I'm sure that I will tolerate that, based on how I feel today. Be aware that everyone heals differently, but 2.5 weeks should be plenty of time to get you feeling ready

Re: travel 2.5 weeks post op

Please remember on some days, even weeks you may have setbacks depending on what tasks you performed. Please read the post op checkpoints.

And I would add to clear the trip with your surgeon.

Re: travel 2.5 weeks post op

The surgeon said I would be fine at 2 weeks. I'm just hesitant to completely trust him, though he's been good otherwise, just because I've talked to so many people who were not fully recovered 2 weeks post op, and if I just go by him, I'll be almost full recovery at 7 days and ready for everything normal 2 weeks. I just want a more realistic idea from WOMEN who have actually gone through it and felt what these recovery times were like.

Re: travel 2.5 weeks post op

Trust him! I was healthy going into the surgery, and didn't have endo scraping issues or anything, but I really feel ok. My husband and I are going out to dinner with friends tonight, and I was already "running around" doing errands for two hrs earlier today. One week out will amaze you, IF you take it easy the first couple of days.

travel 2.5 weeks post op

I don't know but twelve hours sounds really tough. My dilemma is i want yo travel four hours away at twenty days post op but it's to an elevation of 9,000 feet in the mountains. Any suggestions?

05nights:
Wow, get the doc's ok, but aspirin to ward off leg blood clots would be the only thing that comes to mind. If you've never been to that elevation before, realize that you WILL feel very sluggish, and may need snuggle naps next to the fire each afternoon!

Re: travel 2.5 weeks post op

You dont say how old you are and if you are having more than a hysterectomy done. I think for some of the younger woman the recovery is quicker. I am an active 59 year old with no other health problems who normally travels a lot.I had a Davinci hysterectomy and repair of a prolapse and repair of a cystocoele. My post op period was pretty uncomplicated but at 2.5 weeks post op I could not have done it for several reasons. I was exhausted. I was having terrible constipation issues that would have made using public restrooms on a 12 hour drive a problem. I would not have enjoyed the trip and the people around me would not have enjoyed my company.
