whats the risk of death during a hysterectomy?

Well it seems we have several here set up for December....My TVH keeping the ovaries date is December 15th and I am also 35 years old. I think the waiting is the hardest part because it gives your mind time to think of all the things that could happen then one thing leads to another and so on. I have found this site to be such a comfort and I am glad to have found it.

hugs

whats the risk of death during a hysterectomy?

If the surgery goes well, as it does for most women, then generally it does turn out that the waiting was the worst part. However, those of us who have had longer term problems as a result of our surgeries cringe when we hear those words, because for us, that is sooooo not true

The majority of women do very well with their surgeries and go on to live long, happy lives afterwards, often with a much better quality of life than they had pre-hyst. However, that's not true for everyone, as evidenced by some of the posts from our members in the Road Less Traveled forum, the Bladder Matters forum, the Sexual Dysfunction forum, and the Hormone Jungle and No-Hormone Desert Oasis forums.

Unfortunately, going into the surgery, you cannot know with certainty that you will be one of the lucky ones who does well. The odds may be greatly in your favor; however, if you do turn out to be one who has complications, then for you, the odds are 100% against you.

So, in the absence of a crystal ball, it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to play the numbers game. Assuming that your surgery is not being done for a life-threatening condition such as cancer, the best you can do pre-hyst is to make absolutely sure you have done your homework, tried all the non-surgical alternatives, decided that the surgery is the only viable option left and that the prospect of living the rest of your life the way things are now is so unattractive that it's worth taking all the risks involved in major surgery to try to improve your quality of life. That way, if something does go wrong, you can take comfort in knowing that you did the best you could under the circumstances. It really does help in being able to accept one's outcome if things don't go as planned.

Best wishes to all for a successful surgical outcome and an uncomplicated recovery.

Angie,
Welcome!! You are so right!! I almost think it would have been better if someone told me I had to go tomorrow. I couldn't have mine done until Dec 8th because of work and having the kids and all. My husband and kids will be home for 2 weeks at the end of December and I figure it will make it easier for me not having to get them to school and such. Plus the husband can wait on me and keep an eye on the kids. Hope to stay in touch til we go to the castle.
