Liquid diet 2 days prior to surgery...

I am looking for suggestions on what types of liquids other sisters had during the "2 day liquid diet only" phase prior to surgery. I read in a previous post popsicles are a great help. I can think of the obvious liquids; juice, broth, jello. Any other suggestions? I think this will be tuff!

THANKS!

Hi, what you've listed is a good start. I also drink tea ( hot & cold ), coffee and soups with no solid particles.

Best wishes, 2 days doesn't sound like much fun. Hopefully you can keep busy and it'll go quickly for you.

My doctor sent a list of suggestions for clear liquids with the bowel prep instructions. It is pretty much what you and jeanus mentioned. I've copied it below exactly how they sent it to me. There is a "no red" restriction on some things, but I'm not sure why. That is above and beyond clear liquid diet restrictions and I forgot to ask about that at my first appointment

Instead of broth I used consumme since it has a bit more flavor to it.

You only mentioned "liquid" in your post. Since you are on a two day liquid phase, if you can have regular liquids before moving into clear liquids that would give you other options.

What the doctor sent me:
Clear liquids include:
  • strained fruit juices without pulp (apple, white grape, lemonade)
  • water, clear broth, bouillon
  • coffee, tea (without milk or non-dairy creamer)
The following items can be used if NOT RED in color:
  • Gatorade, carbonated soft-drinks, fruit-flavored drinks (Kook-Aid)
  • Posicles or fruit ice, jello
Take care and best wishes

Liquid diet 2 days prior to surgery...

I'm on clear liquids on Monday and a mean bowel prep. Tuesday is my surgery date. Last time I had to do clear liquids, I got chicken and beef bullion and drank broth whenever I felt hungry. I alternated back and forth between the two. I probably have endometriosis on my colon, so this is a must for me. I also ate jello, but beware, the margarita flavored one isn't clear. Lots of juice and tea. Best of luck to you.

Crystal Lite was what saved me. That and jello. Good thing is, any flavor is ok. As long as you can see through it, it's considered clear. Good luck!

Huh? I got my letter from the hospital today, all it says is nothing to eat or drink after midnight before your surgery!

pking,

One thing that saved me was to stop thinking about the lack of something to sink my teeth into... Think volume. Prepare, or better yet get somebody elso to prepare, your meals in courses.

First course, hot tea with honey. Relaxing.
Second course, consume ala Campbells'. Um, Um, good.
Third course, cleanse your palate with a Rocket pop. You know, the good ol' red, white, and blue popsicle. The white part is my favorite.
Fourth course, strawberry jello. Get used to it. Has anybody else heard that lime jello has brain waves??? My husband swears that he learned that from TV. I now have issues with green jello...
Fifth course, Doctors choice...citrus flavored Mag citrate for me.

It wasn't that bad. If your tummy is tied up in knots, your not exactly craving comfort food. Keeping it simple was easy. Really. Truly...

For me, the enemas were the hard part!

Good luck with your preparations. This is a nerve-racking time for you personally. Bless you for raising a child who is willing to serve for me and my family. We are all truly blessed.

THANKS Diane for all the nice comments. Your descriptions for the liquid diet sound fabulous! I will go forward with a very positive attitude about my two days of liquid diet! I will think of my sisters all day long !

I raised two children by myself, if I can get through that I can get through the prep and surgery

Hi there - thanks for all the info - I have my surgery prep appointment on 10/24 and I am sure my instructions will be the same. I have had a previous abdominal surgery and my doctor told me to avoid red colored beverages and jello as the dye can effect the color of the bowel as it is passing through. I guess it makes it hard for the surgical team to tell if there is dammaged tissue. So no red product for me either.
