Whoa - back up a minute
The day before surgery I was on a clear liquid diet, with no food/water after midnight. At noon, I drank a bottle of magnesium citrate (sour, but nothing awful) and about two hours later, it started working. Then, the morning of surgery, I had to give myself an enema, which I've never had but was no big deal.
My doctor said he does this because there's a risk he might nick the bowel and if he does, he doesn't want anything in there that could leak into the abdomen. Makes sense.
If you have to do a bowel prep, don't worry. It really isn't that bad. Just make sure your family has a good sense of humor!
