Mental Illness and Upcoming Hysterectomy

Hello. This is my first post. I'm scheduled to have a full hysterectomy DaVinci style in ten days. I have OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) and it's really messing with my ability to deal with surgery and life in general. I have complex atypical hyperplasia, so I have this cancer fear, and then about a million other intrusive thoughts on top of that. The stress of the surgery and diagnosis makes the OCD worse. I have great care for both diseases and am on meds. Anyone else dealing with both at the same time? Feeling alone.

Re: Mental Illness and Upcoming Hysterectomy

I know how you feel. I'm scheduled on the same day and while I don't have the exact problem, I do have panic attacks. I take zoloft daily to help but it's been real nerve racking thinking about what's to come.

I can't help you with the OCD other than to send hugs.

However, when you are ready and if you want some support on the cancer/possible cancer issue please make sure you stop by the Cancer Concerns forum. There are some incredibly knowlegeable and supportive women there who are walking and have walked your path.

Kelwil - I know what you mean. And you have a long time to wait. I just don't know if the change in hormones (I'm having ovaries removed) will screw up my already delicate wiring.

Thanks to all for the responses. So helpful.

Re: Mental Illness and Upcoming Hysterectomy

I have PTSD, anxiety and very bad depression. I am also on medication for all of this, and waiting on surgery date yet. I have been able to manage well so far, but a bit worried how surgery is going to affect me, so I can relate to how you feel.

My advice is just to make sure you work closely with all of your doctors, and make sure to express any and all concerns with them, especially regarding medication before surgery, and after.

Good luck with everything, and I wish you a speedy and healthy recovery.

Re: Mental Illness and Upcoming Hysterectomy

I agree with juliepost30. Work closely with your current physician to manage your current disorder after surgery. I have generalized anxiety and panic disorders. I also take medication and I think that helped with the feelings of anxiety I had following surgery. Make sure you have orders for your current meds if you will be in the hospital.
Good luck. Hope everything goes great for you!
