25 and wondering about all things hysterectomy

Hi I am 25 years old and I have 2 fibroids in my uterus that my doctor has told me I need to do ablation for. ( I've read a lot of negative things on it for the past 2 months since being told about it for women my age) She has also told me that it could only last 5 years and then I would have to do it again because of my age. I was also told that because I don't want anymore children that a partial hyst might be an option because of the pain and bleeding. My question is at my age (25) if the ovaries and the cervix are left in what might happen after the hyst? Will I have hormone problems or will I go through menopause early? All experiences or comments are greatly appreciated.

Re: 25 and wondering about all things hyst

After a hysterectomy when the uterus is removed and the tubes are left, there is a chance that the blood supply to the ovaries may be compromised- it depends on how your ovaries are supplied with blood. So usually, there is a period of adjustment- it can be said that the ovaries go into shock, and depending on how they used to be supplied, will recover back to how they were before- there is a graphic somewhere on this site that illustrates this very well. If you keep your cervix, some monthly bleeding will happen when you ovulate, because of the nature of the cervix. Most people call them mini-periods. And that's all I can think of.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend an ablation if you have fibroids either, but what about other options like embolization or myomectomy? Did your doc offer those as a less invasive option? I just don't like the idea of someone so young getting a hysterectomy when there may be other options for you.

She said that my insurance didn't allow the others I would have to pay out of pocket for the other procedures. She said I had the option for ablation or partial hysterectomy for the pain blood and the fibroids. She recommended this site for resource before I made a decision. Insurance is a factor for my options.

Re: 25 and wondering about all things hysterectomy

I just had an evaluation for Acessa today another option for fibroids. One of the things I learned is a good doctor's office can help you navigate insurance. Especially with these newer less invasive procedures. Acessa is only approved for people with <> insurance but with the help of doctors other procedures can be approved.

This office is working on getting approval for me for Acessa which can take 3-4 months and they are actually going through the hassle just so I have the option if I decide to go this route.

So you may want to get a second opinion or explore some of the other options.

Re: 25 and wondering about all things hysterectomy

I was told that because I had one ovary removed that I might go into menopause a few yrs earlier. But if you have a hysterectomy and ovaries are kept, you'll still have Pms stuff and will go into meno whenever you originally would . When did your mom go into meno ? That's the best guess as to when you will. Have you tried hormonal means ? My dr tried me on lo loestrin to stop periods, which would have helped. Once we exercised all the options, my hysterectomy was approved rather quickly. I'd spent numerous yrs on anti inflammatories and they just weren't working anymore.

Most drs like to leave healthy ovaries, because of the hormones they provide. The cervix can still bleed monthly, a mini period.
