Stool softener before hysterectomy surgery??

My TVH is scheduled for 6/25. I'm very concerned about bowel movements after surgery as I am not always the most regular person. I haven't had a BM since Friday which is normal for me but I really want to have a good one before surgery so I won't have too many issues post op. Sorry if TMI...any ideas?? Usually when I get nervous...having a BM is the first thing that happens so there is still hope 😊

Re: Stool softener before surgery??

My fibroid was so large that my insides were having trouble navigating food around it, so for about three weeks to a month (probably a month, really) beforehand, I was on a daily dose of Miralax. (That included the day before my surgery.) It definitely helped. It's quite mild and has some stimulant properties although it's mostly a stool softener.

I was also on it for about two weeks afterwards before I started tailing off bit by bit. If you take a dose before your surgery, you should be fine and if you tend to get stopped up anyway, it's probably a good idea. Make sure to bring it up with your doctor though. Good luck!

Re: Stool softener before surgery??

Its funny you as this because I am sooo not regular either and I remember asking the pre op nurse if anyone has ever pooped on the table. I know it was an embarrassing question but hey I wanted to know. She said most people when they are out will not do that. As for after the surgery stool softeners for sure! I had an abdominal hysterectomy but it still hurt inside to "push' to use the bathroom so I took them for a while after surgery. I'm wishing you the best of luck and if it makes you feel better to use them now then for sure use them now. We have enough to worry about the day of surgery so anything to ease your mind a bit. Good luck!

Re: Stool softener before surgery??

Our surgeries are on the same day....lucky us! As like u, I am not regular either. Part of my prep is a fleets enema and medicated douche, but I am also going to start a stool softener. After reading many posts, it seems like that the bowel movement is what a lot of women have problems with. So I want to nip that in the butt ASAP...LOL. Good luck Wednesday. What time is your surgery?

Re: Stool softener before surgery??

Please make sure you tell your Dr about this idea. They can confirm it as a good idea or possible recommend something else. You don'tnwant this to cause an issue with your surgery by not telling them.

Re: Stool softener before hysterectomy surgery??

Mine's in 4 weeks and I'm already on stool softeners. I have a fibroid the size of a newborn's head nestled on my colon, and on Lupron, which causes constipation. Such fun.

I arrive at 6:15 and surgery is at 7:45. I'll be thinking about U and all are other Sisters that have surgery that day.
