Morphine allergy answer for Marthamydear

I am hyper sensitive to many meds and the way they found out I was allergic to morphine was by giving it to me in the castle after I had shoulder reconstruction in 1989. It wasn't pretty, My DS happend to visit shortly after the med was given and she freaked out; she thought I was going to die. I had hallucinations and lost all controll of body function I was ing and was covered in hives. Valium causes me to go into convulsions, it happened while I was strapped to the operating table and I ended up pulling every muscle in my body. Codine works the same on me as the morphine. It seems every time I am in the castle they find a new drug I can not take. The most recent trip was in Feb '02 for brain injury, the sub for my PCP didn't bother to read my chart and ordered Ultracet (another pain killer) not supposed to give to those allergic to codine. This time it was my DH who thought I would not recover. Now when I have to go to the castle they put red wrist bands on my left wrist for every allergy and I make sure the nurses and drs are aware of my allergies each time I am given something. On 9/23/03 when I am in for my TAH/BSO/LOA I will not only be taking what I need for the procedure I am also on 5 other meds for the brain injury. I feel like a walking pharmacy.

Donna, I am so sorry for all your health problems and allergies on top of it. Is your brain injury something that can be cured, are you under treatment temporarily or long term? You need to take real good care of yourself - I'm glad they have you CLEARLY MARKED now for your future care. Maybe by the end of September you'll be feeling better otherwise for your TAH/BSO/LOA. Sorry, I don't know the LOA part, but I'm having the TVH/BSO (could end up as a TAH I guess...)!!!

Anyway, thank you for the info on your allergies, along with the entertaining graphic (where do you find a sicky smilie guy?) From what you said, I am guessing that I would be ok with a morphine drip, because I have had codeine a number of times (when we lived in England!) and it's never been a problem for me.

Write to me anytime, you have a long wait. Try to keep well and accident free until then!

Michele
