4 weeks post hysterectomy: I'm suffering from anxiety attacks, it's miserable

I had a Davinci Hysterectomy and kept my ovaries on July 6, 2015. I'm 4 weeks out and am having terrible anxiety during the day. I wake up in the middle of the night with panic attacks as well. This started 3 days post op. Prior to this I had a history of just 3 panic attacks in the last 47 years. The doctor put me on Ativan but it isn't completely helping. Has anyone experienced this? When will it end? I am afraid I will never be the same again.

Re: I'm suffering from anxiety attacks, it's miserable 😔

I had the daVinci procedure too on July 29. So far physically my healing is going well, but I have a history of anxiety and panic attacks and had a rough day yesterday with both. I think part of it is some normal depression that happens after surgery and for me just not being able to be out with others is hard or do my normal activities. I do see a therapist and am going to try getting in to see her soon also. I think a lot of what you are feeling is normal and please know that you are not alone!

Thank you for your reply. Last night was tough. I kept being woken up by the anxiety. I took 1 mg Ativan the Dr prescribed but it didnt really work. I too have a history of depression and anxiety but Iv never known anxiety like this. I think this is due to hormonal fluctuations. It feels as though my ovaries must be in over drive. I had my hormone levels, thyroid and cortisol levels tested and they are in normal range though so I'm perplexed. I saw a therapist who is helping me and Iv been praying a lot. Thank you for writing me and letting me know I'm not alone. Having all of this come out of no where after the surgery has been terrifying. I just want to feel like my old self. Keep me posted on how your doing. God Bless and hang in there! Ill be thinking of you!

could definitely be hormones...some women here said it took 6 wks for their ovaries to kick back in.

i had to get my hrt upped recently because of anxiety attacks.

Re: 4 weeks post hysterectomy: I'm suffering from anxiety attacks, it's miserable

I had awful anxiety attacks in the first several weeks. I had never experienced them before! It took several weeks for them to get better-I really can't remember exactly how long but I think it was around 6 weeks. My physician did not prescribe medication; she said to wait and see if they subsided because it takes the hormones a while to regulate things, and if it didn't get better she could prescribe something. I ended up getting "back to normal" so I never tried medication.

I do remember that they were pretty awful! I hope yours get better soon.

Re: 4 weeks post hysterectomy: I'm suffering from anxiety attacks, it's miserable

I went to the Dr today and my labs show that I am in the range of menopause now after the surgery although I kept my ovaries, which explains the anxiety, panic and hot flashes. A today I was put on a low dose estrogen and the doctor said I should start feeling better in about 4 or 5 days. I'm also on 10mg lexapro and they upped it to 20mg until I level out and they are able to get the right dose of estrogen for me. I'm feeling hopeful tonight for the first time in 5 weeks. Thank you for the advise and counsel everyone

Do you have any other techniques to deal with your anxiety? I have Ativan which I have used a couple of times-mostly at night to help me relax and sleep. For daytime, I have found deep breathing techniques and concentrating on muscle relaxation to be helpful. I think it may be wise to wait a bit and see if your hormones level out, but understand how anxiety and panic attacks are very scary and debilitating. I think the long and somewhat lonely days of recovery make things worse. Hang in there and I hope you feel better soon!

Re: 4 weeks post hysterectomy: I'm suffering from anxiety attacks, it's miserable

I've had anxiety & depression for 23 years, I'm 38. I agree absolutely with what everyone's said. My depression & anxiety went nuts after surgery & I already take a lot of medication including lexapro with pristiq for anxiety. I needed hrt & couldn't wait until my 2 week follow-up. As soon as I received my labs for no cancer, I was prescribed estradiol. That's really helped to restabilize me. I think you should be feeling better soon & am praying for you!!
