hernia :(
Hi
I am looking for someone to give me a clue. My Dr. just told me I have a "ventral hernia" and I won't see the surgeon until Wednesday, can someone here answer questions in the meantime.
Long story: I had a SAH in May 2005. Vertical incision from bellybutton on down. (placenta accreta) Afterwards, I had a sharp tugging pain about an inch or two to the right of the incision that would not ease up, so I made an appointment, he ordered me an x-ray to rofo, didn't see anything, referred me to psych for depression.
Same pain continued off and on, not disruptive in my life, but there nonetheless.
This past summer, I have developed lung disease, and was coughing quite violently for a few weeks.
A few weeks ago, the old pain worsened some, and then I could feel a lump under my skin about 2 inches above my bellybutton.
My questions are:
Is this hernia directly related to the hyst., even though the location of the pain, the lump, and the incision are not together?
Is it directly related to the cough?
If I already had 3 cesareans, appendectomy, gallbladder, and the hyst., and am way overweight, will the surgeon be able to do laparoscopic?
Anybody with any experience please reply! This will be my 21st surgery! (year of hysterectomy= 5 surgeries in 6 months)
Thank you x a billion

Re: hernia :(
Did you find out more information at your appointment? I hope so! Don't hesitate to seek a second surgical opinion as well!

Re: hernia :(
Thanks!
I am scheduled for surgery 12/15.
He is saying both "laparoscopic" and "home the same day" but I am skeptical!
Trying to cram in all Christmas preparations now!

Re: hernia :(
I developed an incisional hernia from my hysterectomy about 5 months post op. My surgeon said laproscopic repair but it ended up being paritally laproscopic and partially open. Worst of both possible worlds in my opinion. In any case, I was still home the same day, on pain meds for about 3 weeks and then everything was back to normal.
I had a bad cough last summer too and my PCP expressed concern that it could cause a hernia - so I guess it can happen.

Re: hernia :(
I had a vertical incision TAH/BSO about 19 months ago. Have healed well. But this past month I got that awful bronchitis that's been going around in my area. Coughing like crazy. I happened to have an appt with my surgeon just three days after I noticed tenderness in a small area above my belly button. He checked it out, asked me to cough while he touched it. He said it was a small hernia. It's not causing me any pain or problems, thankfully. He did tell me to hold a pillow over my stomach when I cough.
