Opinions - gyn or surgeon to operate?
I'm starting to have some thoughts about my GYN doing my surgery for hysterectomy, cystocele and rectocele -- it seems a lot of surgery for a GYN to be doing - and am wondering if anyone else out there has had the same thoughts! Might it be better to have a surgeon do the surgery, since it involves so many different "departments?" Any Sisters out there who have been there and would have some advice?

Opinions - gyn or surgeon to operate?
I had a GYN do a TVH with anterior and posterior repair. She came well recommended by my DR and I have been quite pleased with everything she has done from pre-op to now. I am 5 weeks post-op.

Why don't you ask your GYN for a referral to a second opinion? Most insurers require it anyway. And don't be shy to ask how often they do the repair procedures, and their "success" rate -- i.e. how many have to come back and have more work done later.
Most general surgeons will NOT perform any of the GYN stuff...but a GYN-oncologist is able to perform much more complex surgeries than the average GYN, so perhaps that's another avenue to explore.
Best wishes to you as you research your options!

Opinions - gyn or surgeon to operate?
I am having a TAH/with rectal fistula repair. I am having them both done at the same time but the TAH by my gyn and the fistula repair by a colon surgeon. The colon surgeon told me if you needed any other kind of surgery or repair you need a specialist.
Not downing gyns but he said alot of fistulas occur after a Hyster. And that gyns arent trained on that type of repair.
Hope this helps!!!

Opinions - gyn or surgeon to operate?
As far as I know, except for a GYN-Oncologist..no other surgeons do GYN related problems...I am having a GYN for my hysterectomy, a General Surgeon will be doing the Gall Bladder and a Urologist will be doing my bladder suspension.....They just take turns and the GYN is the one who takes care of the main issues like pain control, etc......
I hope this helps
GOD BLESS

Thanks to all of you for your responses! I have another question -- what is a "bladder suspension" as opposed to a cystocele (prolapsed bladder) repair? Are they one and the same?

GYN's are surgeons..they have been trained to deal with the bladder, rectum, etc...if it wasnt for my GYN i would never have found out what my problem was..my GP couldnt figure it out (even after doing a pelvic/pap exam (duh!) nor could the urologist i was seeing--why couldnt he figure out my bladder had dropped?? (again..duh!)..after all, it was bladder issues that had me going to the dr in the first place.......a cystocele repair is the same as bladder repair..a cystocele is a prolapsed bladder..there are several methods of how to fix bladder prolapse so this will have to be discussed with your dr---how does he/she do bladder repairs.....my GYN put my bladder back in to its place and sewed up the anterior wall of the vagina to healthy ligaments that will support the bladder....hope this helped.
