Fibroids fused to rectum

I had my LAVH/BSO on Feb 29 and all went well and apart from some lower back and cramp-like pains every now and then. However my doc said one of my larger fibroids had "fused" to my rectum and that it was "a big mess" getting it out. I have not seen anything online about fibroids behaving like this, and my surgeon had never seen thus either. Has anyone heard of this?

Thank you

Re: Fibroids fused to rectum

Do you also have some endometriosis? My sister went for an emergency hysterectomy, and the doctor actually decided to leave her uterus because it was so fused to her bowel wall by endometriosis adhesions that it would have been like removing a malignant tumour (high risk of bleeding and all that other stuff). So, she had her ovaries and tubes removed, but is now managing the rest with hormones.

Re: Fibroids fused to rectum

The doctor did not mention that when visited after surgery, but that sounds like a reasonable explanation. I have my post-op appointment today and hope to learn more. THANKS

Re: Fibroids fused to rectum

I had TAH for large fibroids and cyst removed from left ovary on 3/2. My doctor also mentioned something about adhesions that were removed. Am not sure what he was talking about (I was still in the hospital when he told me that, under a haze of narcotics! and my husband and sister had not yet been by to visit me since it was so early in the morning when the doctor visited).

I did specifically ask him about endometriosis and remember that he told me I had none so my adhesions were not from that. I have never had previous abdominal surgery so it also was not old scar tissue. Not sure if my fibroids had somehow grown into adjacent organs and/or something else like the pelvic wall?

Will see nurse practicioner tomorrow for staple removal and plan on asking then what the adhesions meant! Karen

Re: Fibroids fused to rectum

I had the same problem with adhesions. There were adhesions connecting my bowel to my fibroids, uterus and ovaries. My doc said it was an extremely difficult surgery trying to remove everything and free up all my other organs. I did ask why this had happened and he told me that some people are just prone to it. Also in my case having the large fibroids and cysts moving, shoving and grinding everything around didn't help matters out any.

Re: Fibroids fused to rectum

Hi all, Happy to report that pathology was normal and I just had endometrial adhesions. Thank you for all the comments!
