PreOp Bloodwork include HIV test?

I had full bloodwork done before my TAH and also had blood drawn several times during my stay in the hospital. I was just thinking: would they have done HIV screening prior to surgery?

I know that my pre-op blood work included an HIV test. I know that because I had to consent to it.

This might be another case where hospitals differ - not sure.

Hospitals will always require a special consent from you, in order to perform HIV testing.

Because all hospital staff practice "universal precautions".....meaning they behave as each patient has active AIDS, as well as any other bloodborne disease, in order to protect themselves and others......it is not really necessary for them to know if you are HIV positive, because they would do nothing differently.

Before surgery, it is important that they check blood counts and make sure your lungs and heart are stable.
