post op opinion

I am almost 2 weeks post op. I was told a simple enema was good enough. I was told to do it 1 hour prior to coming to the hospital. Believe me the first 3 days you lady's will not feel like bearing down to go. So My advise is eat light. DH took me to Olive garden where I dined on salad and pasta fagilo soup the night before my surgery. Then the first days in the hospital I did not eat at all. Then I just ate soft foods and took stool softner when I got home.

Best of luck to you all!!!

Scared to death of the enema

Hi Ladies,

You all are an answer to a prayer. I am scheduled to see a urologist on the 24th, sign my consent papers on the 25th, bloodwork on the 30th and abdominal hysterectomy on
Nov. 1st.

Please pray that my doctor is like all the ones I've read about here and does not require the enema. I've never had one before and am so scared of it! The catheter too! Isn't that ridicoulous. It's just like when I found out I had to have c-section for my baby I couldn't get past the fear of the epideral.

Anyway, I would appreciate your prayers on those dates.
Also can someone tell me what happens at the urologist.
I've never been to one of them either. I don't deal well with doctors or hospitals.

I'd love to hear some personal expereiences for that.

I have endometriosis and there is a huge bump on my left side of my adbomen. I was scheduled to have the bump taken out last month but the other doctor I was going to was not on the same page as the nurse or the insurance company and they made me so uncomfortable I couldn't go through with it.

I've found a new doctor who comes highly recommened. He's very into nutrition and vitamins. I really like him but I'm worried about the urologist. Can anybody help me get through that part of it?

When the new doc was taking my history (he talked to me for 2 hours!) he asked if I got up during the night to go to the bathroom and I said sure 2 or 3 times. I thought that was normal. It's not something you talk about to everyone you meet. Anyway, because of my history and genetics he suggested I see the urologist and they'll be able to do a surgery to correct that at the same time they do the hysterectomy. Has anyone heard of that?

I really didn't think it was a problem. But if it's going to be worse after I'd rather get it done at the same time.
I just don't know what to expect at the urologist.

Thanks for listening. I'm getting to that week before stage too!

Write soon.

Has anyone else NOT had to do a bowel prep?

I had a TAH 8/29; my Doctor required me to give myself an enema the night before surgery (its just a precaution in case they nick the bowel during surgery to keep the possbility of contamination down). I used a disposable Fleet enema--its easy to use, not painful and takes about 2 to 5 minutes to work. I had eaten lightly that day (cereal for breakfast, soup and rice for lunch, and soup and a roll for dinner).

The other thing I worried about was the catheter for surgery--I had general anesthesia (with no complications from it); they put the catheter in while I was asleep and when it came time to remove it the second day the nurse explained that it was held in place with a small baloon. They deflated the baloon and the catherter slipped right out--I didn't feel it at all.

Good Luck!

Texas girls

Allison, Thanks for your question - it helps all of us who are waiting to read as much as we can. Please forgive me for using "your space" but I wanted to contact of few of the ladies who answered you. Chemyn, KB, and SillyBee - I am from Texas too! We moved to Pennsylvania almost two years ago and I left my Doctor of 8 years! I am a little scared because I don't know the doctor or the hospital - I am going in the first of December to remove a uterus "full" of fibroids! I would love to visit with you and hear how things are in Texas - we lived in Sweetwater (30 miles west of Abilene) for 12 years. If you have time you can email me directly at cfullarton@easy-pages.com

Has anyone else NOT had to do a bowel prep?

I had a LAVH-BSO on Sept 6th and I only had to do an enema the morning of the surgery (fortunately my sister was here and gave it to me..don't think I could have done it myself). I ate very lightly the day before the surgery. I too was worried about the catheter but to my surprise didn't even notice it.
