Sense of smell and taste?

Was wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

A few weeks pre-op (as my hormones and pain levels raged out of control), I noticed that my sense of smell was somewhat blunted, and my sense of taste was really ... off. I couldn't taste salt at all - I even put some on my finger and licked it. I could have identified it as salt, yes, but the taste of it wasn't at all salty.

Then immediately after surgery that sense came back - too much! They brought me broth and I couldn't drink it, it was so salty. But it wasn't, really, for anyone else.

Now, things with no salt in them at all (like coffee or sweet tea) taste salty! And my sense of smell is now much stronger - I can smell flowers or coffee or perfumes a mile away.

It would be easy to dismiss the reaction as something medicine-induced, but I'm on the same painkillers as I was pre-op.

OH. WAIT. You know what? Pre-op I'd been on Black Cohosh, Evening Primrose, and Progesterone cream for months, and the doc had me stop it about 6 weeks before surgery. It was about a month before surgery that I noticed I couldn't taste salt, and that continued up until surgery, when I put myself back on all the supplements. Could it be connected there? :?:

Re: Sense of smell and taste?

I definitely think that our sense of smell and taste are affected by hormones (or lack of). I have never noticed having issues with salt, but I have noticed that somethings I used to love before surgery, I really don't care for now. Not sure if that is my lack of appetite or what, but it is kinda crazy. I used to LOVE chocolate, or anything sweet, but now can't even finish a candy bar...it just doesn't taste the same.

And the sense of smell....OH MY GOODNESS!!! I cannot believe how sensitive my nose is now. I love my husband's cologne, but I can't go into the bathroom for awhile after he puts it on because it is sooooo strong!! (I still love it on him though )
And it seems like I am a lot more sensitive to unpleasant smells too!! I have cats and I never really noticed the smell of their litter boxes, but oh my goodness, they get scooped out and deodorized EVERY day now!!!

Re: Sense of smell and taste?

A neighbor said that anesthesia can cause a lack of your sense of taste, on and off for up to six months

Re: Sense of smell and taste?

Went to IHOP last night. Had water with lemon to drink, served before the meal (which was salty - bacon & eggs)... but even before the food came, the lemon water tasted SALTY.
