Nausea / Stomach Virus for 5 days now & I am 3 weeks post opp!

Ok ladies – Have been VERY sick!!!

Started on Monday – did not eat much at all…. Then Monday Night I started throwing up around 8 o’clock. Called Dr. she said to come in first thing in the morning.

Went in – still running fever still throwing up… she gave me a shot of phenogrin (sp?) and a script for some nausea pills (6 of them that dissolve in your mouth). I can take these every 6 hours – but with them being $157.00 per script I am only using them when I HAVE TO!!!

I have been sick off an on ever since. Even this morning – day 5 I am still gagging and trying to start throwing up…

Is this maybe hormonal?

I have been on HRT since leaving the castle and I am not doing anything different!!! I am taking 1.25 Premarin... could this be the cause? Ihave not taken it since Monday though - I have not been able to keep anything down so I have not taken anything.... if this is the cause how long before I could tell this?

I am going to my GP today – for blood pressure meds check up and I think I am going to get them to take an x-ray just to make 100% sure nothing was left behind. I have never in my life been sick with a virus that lasted this long! I have lost 7 lbs just this week alone! I can’t even do that on an all veggie and fruit diet! Lol

Anyone else have this problem during recovery? I am 3 weeks today!!!!

That does sound a long time to be having those symptoms. I really feel for you.

Are you having bowel movements? Because one thing you want to rule out is an intestinal obstruction (that can be caused by adhesions from surgery). If you are not having bowel movements tell the doctor right away, because that is a danger sign.

Another possibility is a type of food poisoning. Depending on the type, it might be treatable by antibiotics, so it might be worth while asking your doctor if it makes sense to take a stool sample to culture it and find out for sure.

I am on Cipro for the staff infection that is in my incision... but I will make sure to ask my gp about it today!

Awwww, I am so sorry for you.

I was going to ask you the same thing tgio has already asked regarding your bowel movements. It is not uncommon following abdominal surgery to have a bowel obstruction or even paralysis of the bowels, commonly referred to as ileus.

Unfortunately, my sister had this complication following her TAH last month.

Please keep us posted.

I sorry you feeling ill. Did the throwing up and ill feeling start when you started to take Cipro? I got so nausiated taking Cipro, felt that way until I was done taking it, 7 days. It's worth talking to your Dr. about. Hope you feel better soon!

yes, you could be having a reaction to the cipro, or to pain meds if you are on them.

Another thing to realize is that even if you are still taking cipro, you might not be getting the benefit of it if you are throwing it up before your body processes it. That is something I learned when I kept throwing up after oral surgery -- afterwards the doctor said I should have called him right away and he would have switched the medication, since it wasn't helping me anyway.

Went to my GP today..... He said that it was VERY unusual to be this sick this long - unless it was the stomach flu.....

This being said he gave me a script of phenogrin and said if I am still not better by Monday am to call my ob doc - that it would more than likely have something to do with my surgery. Since I have not taken my hormones or cipro since Monday that would rule both of those out. Pain meds have been once in a while - and have never bothered me before.

He also said once I take the phenogrin - 30 mins. later to take the Cipro - VERY IMPORTANT!!! So, I have done this already and holding everything down so far!!! Keeping my fingers crossed - hopefully it does not return tonight or in the am!!!!

I feel better though!!! The thing bothering me now is where the tape was covering my incision the ob doc put on Thursday was burning my tummy - so I pulled it off and when I did the skin on my stomach came with it! lol I am having a rough time! lol

All will get better soon - and if it does not I will start calling on some other doctors!!!!

Thanks for all the advice! Oh - I am having regular bm & diarrhea all in the same day - so I don't think it could be a bowl obstruction!!
