Should I take my inhaler with me even though it makes me sick?

Thanks, everybody. My surgery is Tuesday (day after tomorrow!) so I probably don't have time to get the meds all straightened out before then. But I'll definitely take the inhaler with me. I'm not wheezy, just a little tight.

Thanks for tip on rinsing out my mouth afterward. I can't believe the doc and pharmacist didn't tell me that!

I actually brush my tongue after using my inhaler. You could get sores on your tongue if it settles there. Good luck!! Hopefully you'll be feeling better in no time!! Let us know how things go.

I would talk to your doc. There are other rescue formulations besides albuterol. Also ask whether this is an actual reaction to the medication or what is called an epinephrine response, where the heart can race and you get a bit shaky. I have also had these responses, but take my inhaler very, very seldom as my asthma is mild, but can be persistent during hayfever season. Are you also taking something like Zyrtec to reduce allergy symptoms? I took this right up until my surgery.

My anesthesiologist had me take two puffs before surgery and I was concerned because I had not taken my inhaler for close to a year, and was also afraid my heart would race or I would have a heart attack, but I had no problem. I was also given my Flovent daily by my nurses, day and evening. My lungs felt strong and really great post-op. You'll be given a little breathing apparatus to strengthen and will be encouraged to cough. I walked a lot also.

Also, talk to your doc about post pain meds. Apparently, because of my asthma, I had to be given a different drug in recovery (which the nurse said was Demerol), which did not work well FOR ME. Be certain to have a backup plan and discuss everything with your doc and with your anesthesiologist so there are no surprises.

I am so glad you're here in this forum. Glad to help you any way we can!

Take care,

Jackie
