NOW I have thyroid issues :(

I had a px last week for work. The dr got the blood back and said I have an overactive thyroid.
I had thyroid trouble back in '83 also. (it did get healed)
NOW, I am going throught this all over again. :eyes:
Does anyone know if its possible for the thyroid to act up after a hysterectomy?MY thyroid is hyperactive. I LOVE the fact that I'm losing weight. ACtually 25 pounds since the TAH. I thought it was curves. I guess I was wrong. :confuse:

I am hyperthyroid, and I had started exercising before it was diagnosed and was loosing weight like crazy. I'm not sure about hysterectomy causing it though. If you had this in the past, how did they fix it. After many blood test and scans found out I have Graves disease. I choose to try medications and it has worked for me for about 1 year now. It is dangerous to let this go. I had gone into a thyroid storm and you don't want to let that happen. You might even confuse the symptoms with menopause..I was acting crazy, just didn't know it. Now that it is under control, I've gained most of the 25 pounds back(what a bummer) and will have to keep trying to work it off. I am 16 days post op and doing great. Just trying not to overdo. I don't want to have problems later. My dr. said earlier this week, she would let me start activities at 5 weeks, if I have no complications...Good luck to you with recovery and thyroid...I had LAVH and anterior repair.

Actually, they told me when I was diagnosed over 20 years ago that I had Graves disease. They gave me a choice of either having the radioactive iodine OR go on pills. They said I had a 5% chance that it would be cured on the pills. AND IT WAS...up until now.
I opted for the pills because my thought is this...
If you give me the iodine, you will be "killing" my thyroid and I will eventually have to go on pills for the rest my life anyway.
So, why deal with radioactive iodine when they could not guarantee it doesn't cause cancer. If I have to be on pills anyway, lets just treat it that way.
Does this make sense to you?

My thought was it was thyroid becasue it is all hormonal anyway. WHo knows. I was hoping for more responses with some answers.

I have an under-active thyroid. My dr told me that a hyst (or any other surgery for that matter) can upset the thyroid.

My dr. didn't think the surgery would be a problem for the Graves disease. Said it might take alittle longer to heal, which hasn't happened. I also didn't think it was a good idea to swallow radioactive iodine. I'd much rather be on the pills. In fact for the disease to stay in remission for 20 years is wonderful. I will be able to try going off my medicine after 18-24 months and hope for the best. Having low thyroid is alot more common and not quite so dangerous. I don't know anyone else that has graves disease. Hope your Dr. can try pills again...Good luck.
